There is a common misconception, or maybe just a dam lie, going around Dem circles on Quora, X, Fb. That is Red States are welfare users and Blue states are welfare payers. They invariably use poor southern states like Mississippi as an example.

This video refutes that: Something like 70% of top welfare using states actually are Blue ALL of the lowest using welfare states are Red Ethnic groups are not equal users of welfare, and it’s not blacks at #1 (hint—look at the southern border) Blue states also pay more benefits than Red states per user

Welfare is a good temporary safety net and should be kept as such (short term for emergencies and at this time of year good to remember that).

Medicare is not welfare. People paid into Medicare.

The government used to give commodities and other help came from the church. Bean, rice, dried milk and cheese.

And Medicare won’t pay for nursing home. Medicaid does. So if you worked all your life, you are on your own when you get old and infirm. If you didn’t, the state will take care you in a nursing home. That is our two tier system.

If a person paid into it, it is not welfare. I know there are some who never worked a paying job and never paid into it.

More are on Medicaid and there are many on both.

Mosy people who DID work all their life and paid all those taxrs still can’t afford nursing home care at $200+ per day for long. I think Medicare covers a few weeks, maybe months.Mom’s private insurance would have covered six months. At $85,000 yearly costs VERY few have enough savings.

Our government rests entirely on a Ponzi scheme and no one knows how to fix it.

You are proving my point. If you want long term care, you need insurance. Only those who did not work are eligible. If you worked, you are on your own. My mom’s house would get about two years’ worth of long term care.

“People paid into Medicare.”

And you have no choice. Unless you’re an illegal that is.

So a 64 1/2 year old illegal could come over, work 6 months then get legal status and receive Medicare for 25 years?

The average Medicare recipient receives three times more in benefits than they contributed. The premiums for Medicare Part B, by law, cover only 25% of the costs. The other 75% comes from the General Fund.

40% of all Medicare costs are paid by the General Fund. Medicare may not be welfare, but the government picks up a big part of the tab. The Medicare Trust Fund is exhausted in 2031. By law, Medicare benefits will be reduced to the amount of revenue collected—about a 20% reduction. Medicare is not sustainable as currently structured.

In order for Medicaid to pick up the costs of nursing homes, the recipients must divest themselves of most of their assets and provide them to the government.

I am aware of that but technically it isn’t welfare. For people who get it and never paid into it, it is welfare.

Yup...many people (like me) paid into it from the age of about 16 to at least 65. Some people couldn’t pay into it because of serious, long term, and *genuine* disabilities. Some didn’t pay into it because of fake disabilities. And some didn’t pay into it because they arrived here late in life.

Exactly. I am not nuts about the idea and especially how it has been abused but it was there before I ever started working.

That all changed with the “War on Poverty”. The second most relevant today (after Dylan’s Masters of War) protest song from the 60s/70s.

Look at the budgets of every state.

There is no red state in the nation.

Not one.

Deep State has every state in the union by its financial shorthairs.

We are not voting-with-our-feet our way out of this.

They are called entitlement programs for a reason. The government (read taxpayers) is heavily subsidizing Medicare. Your contributions don’t cover the costs. Partial welfare?
