I remember a story in the Washington Times from the early 90's quoting the FAA Southwest regional managers handbook to not let qualifications get in the way of meeting diversity goals.
This has been going on for some time and it's finally bearing fruit.
I thought the same thing, when I was an air traffic controller too. 👍 I didn’t think they wanted to hire the best.

Air traffic control applicants used to be selected on a point system. Credit was giving to military controllers and CTI graduates. CTI was a two year program available in many colleges with specific instruction toward becoming a controller.
During 0bama’s second term, military and CTI credits were removed and diversity points were added. Schools dropped the CTI programs and here we are.
