$1,400 for tickets to see ‘The Nutcracker’? I’m fine with skipping this holiday ritual.

It’s a seasonal ritual that countless families enjoy — getting dressed in their holiday finest and heading off to see a local production of the “The Nutcracker,” that candy-coated ballet that celebrates all things Christmas.

It’s also a ritual that’s critical to the bottom line of many dance companies, which depend on those solid “Nutcracker” sales to get them through the rest of the year. In fact, one prominent company, the Atlanta Ballet, told me that 70% of its annual box-office revenue derives from its production of the holiday favorite

Memories, got dragged there by my parents, my dad wasn't happy about it either, any way slept through the whole show, even during "the Dance Sugar Plum Fairies".

Surely those girls would be just as pretty/graceful without destroying their toes . . .

That is, assuming they are even girls to begin with and not men pretending to be girls.

Take a picture, make a video; it will last a lot longer and not cost nearly as much. You'll thank me for that later. Don't mess around, go to the ones who are really really serious about ballet and the Nutcracker!

Besides, this way you can sit in your underwear, drink bear and scratch while you watch.

The music is great; the story never was that appealing to me. The Fantasia version was fun to watch, though.

Took the family to see it. Yes, we were dressed in our finest.

A lovely meal beforehand was icing on the cake.

But $1,400?

More like $600.

My kids were older (teens) when we saw it and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

Merry Chirstmas to you also, God bless.

It’s not too hard to local productions by smaller ballet companies or smaller ballet schools.

Those are the best.

Lovely stuff - watch it and enjoy the music and the skill it takes to move like that. Ballet is the art of forcing the human body into grotesque positions it has no business in. (Yeah, I used to date a dancer.) This show, done right, is a dance with the audience in it.

I wouldn't recommend delving too deeply into the plot. It's a little unsettling. Just my opinion. Merry Christmas, all!

The Fantasia version was fun to watch, though.

FYI "Fantasia" was the first time Nutcracker music was heard in the US, and it wasn't until after WWII that the first performance was given in Frisco, then in NYC a few years later. It's amazing how ubiquitous Nutcracker has become in just one lifetime.

I had no idea it was that expensive - since I’ve never been and don’t like those kinds of shows. I assumed it was more like $15. LOL.

I like movies where the job of the actor is to make you forget he is acting. In my opinion, a good actor is one that can act so down-to-earth you can imagine he’s a normal person and forget you’re watching a movie. In real life conversations, people don’t make extravagant gestures and poses, or break into song.

The trouble with broadway shows, operas or ballets is that it’s the opposite - they all seem so self-important and self-absorbed - Look at me! Look at me! I’m a star!

If a movie actor behaved that way he would be considered to be “over-acting” - like Al Pacino.

“Let’s also not forget some of the problematic elements in “The Nutcracker” in terms of how it can propagate stereotypes.”

Stereotypes are not derived from nothing. I laugh when liberals refer to some innocuous behavior as “problematic”. Even if it is behavior exhibited by 95% of the group, they will argue that “not ALL ____s are that way.”
