Florida State Board of Trustees votes to file legal complaint against ACC; see how we got here

Florida State University held a Board of Trustees meeting Friday morning to discuss the future of the athletic department and its affiliation with the Atlantic Coast Conference. The board voted to file a legal complaint against the ACC.

The current total cost of exiting the ACC is $572 MM; includes both penalty fee and grant of rights. Supposedly the grant of rights is as ironclad as an agreement as they come but hearing about potential legal arguments to blow up the agreement.

The ACC GOR is modelled upon the XII GOR. After years of examination, no one found a way to break the GOR. There are two ways out: let it expire; or, pay a fee likely to be a lot less than $572m.

fsu willingly agreed to the Grant of Rights along with the rest of the schools in the ACC. If they want to break the contract, that’s fine. Just pay the $572 million and go on your merry way.
