They go to college because that is the minor league system for professional football. A compassionate liberal government would require that all professional athletes pay into a government controlled investment fund and only pay the athlete a sustenance wage during the playing career. Then there would be lifetime payouts to the athlete after they retire, so they don't become poor.
Just a small fee to the government, and of course, 10% to the Big Guy.
