New York City suspended an engineer’s inspection authority after determining that a fundamental error may have led to the partial collapse of a Bronx apartment building this week.
The state-licensed engineer made a “catastrophic” mistake by labeling a load-bearing column as a decorative part of the structure in June in plans filed with the Department of Buildings, Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.
Adams and Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo said that they suspended the engineer’s authority to inspect buildings’ exterior walls and were looking to revoke the authority permanently.

All my homes and buildings made it through the Loma Priets E quake. I do wonder if he double checked everything? Seems someone, somewhere on the line would have caught this?

I hope he is the exception and not the rule. That column between 'is legs is probably just decorative and can be removed.

I suspect “engineer” in this case is like the “sanitary engineer” who drives your local garbage truck.

It is not about the building’s design being flawed. It is about a falsehood in an incompetent inspection report causing the contractor to inadvertently undermine the load-bearing wall leading to the collapse.

The city said its investigation into the sudden partial collapse on Monday of the seven-story Morris Heights apartment building is ongoing, but that it found that the inspector had instructed contractors doing work on the property to remove bricks on the support beam, but not to install temporary supports first. That doesn't pass the smell test. A city INSPECTOR gave demolition instructions to the CONTRACTORS? And the contractors listened to the inspector's advice on the structure?
I cannot imagine that is SOP anywhere.

He needs to identify as a woman, real quick.
They can fly p8 aircraft into a runway overshoot into water and have people apologizing for them. All all woman engineering group can build a bridge over a busy intersection and have it collapse killing people and have apologists defending them.

More bad journalism/writing....city engineer/inspector/code enforcement (whatever the local NY name is) marked the beam as “non-load bearing” so the contractor doing whatever work they were doing didn’t support the beam properly. (Not necessarily “demolition” work?)
