Congress has approved legislation that would prevent any president from withdrawing the United States from NATO without approval from the Senate or an Act of Congress.

The measure, spearheaded by Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), was included in the annual National Defense Authorization Act, which passed out of the House on Thursday and is expected to be signed by President Biden.

While you were distracted by abortion and transgender, this got slipped in.

Even though those first two still got approved anyway. And they might have just as well put in 1 trillion for Ukraine. Makes you want to stop paying taxes.

Jimmy Carter unilaterally abrogated the Panama Canal treaty in the 70’s.

Barry Goldwater sued the administration, on the theory that since the Senate was required to get the US into the treaty, the Senate was also required to get the US out of the treaty.

Carter’s abrogation stood.

There’s plenty of precedent. Trump unilaterally abrogated the INF treaty.

I don’t think a congressional prohibition on an executive abrogation would stand.

If the President/Executive Branch doesn’t have the authority to withdraw us from a treaty, but it does have the authority to force us to burn ethanol in our cars ... you might be a Democrat.

“Jimmy Carter unilaterally abrogated the Panama Canal treaty in the 70’s.”

https://history.state.gov/milestones/1977-1980/panama-canal

“The Senate ratified the Neutrality Treaty on March 16, 1978 by a vote of 68 to 32. On April 18, they ratified The Panama Canal Treaty by an identical margin.”

Eurotwits haven’t held up their commitments under the NATO treaty. That pretty much makes it null and void.

They don’t want to give up their socialism.

When the American taxpayer is subsidizing their defense, you can have all the social programs you want and support all those turd worlders coming in.

Trump goes to a NATO nation and says, we will not accept Article 5 so you can stop paying your dues. That’s all it takes. Even if formally NATO exists they should be clear eyed that thr CIC leads the troops.

I suppose Biden will sign this, but you would think any president would oppose a bill that would cede presidential power to Congress.
