Today, I will analyze the Russian strategic situation, while in a future video, I will focus on the Ukrainian one.
Since the third consecutive wave of the Russian offensive operation in Avdiivka brought little to no results, Russian forces started slowly deprioritizing this direction and shifting their focus to other regions, such as the Kupiansk, Lyman, and Bakhmut directions.
The US intelligence recently released an assessment of the Russian offensive operation in Avdiivka and concluded that the main objective was to weaken Western support for Ukraine. The Institute for the Study of War also added that the attempt to take Avdiivka into a pocket was opportunistic in nature – the Russian Command was never confident about succeeding in this venture, which is why the Russian General Staff continuously called it active defense.
According to the US National Security Council, in this opportunistic attack, Russian forces have suffered more than 13 thousand casualties and lost 220 combat vehicles while failing to achieve any operationally significant battlefield gains. When it became clear that the third wave of the offensive would not result in operational success, Russians sharply increased the intensity of attacks in other regions, and Russian sources started claiming that the Avdiivka offensive was just a decoy.
Many Ukrainian and Western analysts concluded that the new pursuit of simultaneous 4 offensive operations is an attempt to regain the theater-level initiative. The analysts identified 2 main goals of this strategy.
FIRST of all, according to the US National Security Council, by maintaining the initiative throughout the winter, Russians want to discourage the West from supporting Ukraine.
SECONDLY, seizing and retaining the initiative is important for political reasons. Last year, for example, after Ukrainians conducted 2 successful counteroffensives, Putin canceled his annual forum because he did not want to answer uncomfortable questions. This year, however, canceling it was not an option because of the Russian presidential elections in March 2024, so it was important to ensure that Russian forces are not passive, despite the fact that the current weather conditions are horrible for offense and lead to disproportionately high losses.
Russian sources claimed that constant heavy rains and snowfalls led to reduced shelling and that strong winds and rain interfered with Russian drone operations. Both Russian and Ukrainian analysts stated that rain and mud impede the speed of ground maneuver advances, that fog and rain complicate both Russian and Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance efforts and lead to reduced numbers of attacks, that the weather conditions limit the use of aviation even more, that mud makes many roads impassable, complicating logistics, and that the falling leaves complicate efforts to hide equipment and personnel. Under such conditions, minimizing losses is impossible, and as we saw in Avdiivka, most Russian assault units get decimated, barely reaching the contact line.
Such costly Russian operations recently prompted the Russian military command to rush newly created and understrength formations to Ukraine to maintain the offensive posture, especially along the eastern front. Ukrainian officials reported that the Russian force grouping along the eastern front has roughly not changed since summer, suggesting that the strength of that grouping is not increasing despite the massive commitment of new personnel to the area.
The Institute for the Study of War concluded that high Russian casualties would likely prevent Russian forces from fully replenishing and reconstituting existing units in Ukraine and forming new operational and strategic reserves. And the problem becomes even more acute when taking into account that the average quality of military personnel has decreased. According to the recently released US intelligence report, Russian forces have lost 315 thousand out of the 360 thousand personnel, which is 87 percent of the total number of their pre-war active-duty ground troops – and these were the best troops that Russians were training for 8 years prior to the invasion.
The Russian leadership has undertaken extensive force generation measures and has very likely offset the Russian losses reported by US intelligence, although new Russian personnel from the partial mobilization and aggressive mobilization of tens of thousands of prisoners likely have lower combat capabilities than those they replaced.”

It was an important day. An important week. There were important visits. A lot of meetings and negotiations, and even more work behind the scenes with friends and skeptics as well – with everyone. Ukraine always defends itself. And it gets what it needs. And even when someone has doubts, we do not give up, but convince and fight. Keep fighting – you are sure to win. That’s exactly how it works.
This is a truly remarkable result for Ukraine and for the whole of Europe. Another step towards Ukraine’s full membership in the EU. I am grateful to everyone who supported us and fulfilled exactly what we had agreed upon. I am grateful to everyone in Ukraine – our team – who did everything necessary. We have fulfilled the recommendations of the European Commission. We have dispelled doubts. Today, there is a decision to open negotiations on accession to the EU. This step will be followed by the next ones. This is a massive job – to integrate the state, all the institutions, all the norms – all of it into the European Union. But we will do it. Ukraine has repeatedly proved what we are capable of. There will be another victorious decision – the time will come when we will be able to celebrate Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Many people in Ukraine are now in high spirits, and this is important, this is motivation. And I congratulate all of you, each and every one of you, on what has been achieved! Achieved by all of us who, through the unity of Ukraine, are strengthening the unity of the whole of Europe.
I would like to especially thank all our boys and girls, all men and women who have fought and are fighting for Ukraine, who are now in combat, who are defending the freedom of Ukraine, who are helping our warriors by treating, training, bringing in weapons, producing weapons. All that we are achieving would not have been possible without the heroic courage of our people, our nation, which inspires the whole world. All of us.
I came back to Ukraine – now I’m in Lviv – with a decision on the European Union and other things that will strengthen us. Air defense. There will be more aid packages, too. We had a good summit with the Nordic countries. Our friends, I thank you for your support. Strong decisions. Denmark – a new package for a billion dollars: sky protection, artillery and much more. Norway – a new package of more than $400 million. In particular, air defense. Finland is also preparing a new package. Iceland is preparing a program of long-term financial support, a very significant one. Sweden – also a new package. There is a powerful statement of the Nordic – Ukrainian Summit, which is another political shell that brings our victory closer.
The visit to Argentina is actually a restart of relations with the entire Latin American region. I am grateful to hear clear words of support.
And, of course, the United States. Today I was at the base in Wiesbaden, Germany, where the U.S. Army Europe and Africa is located. Powerful. We have our military guys there. They are working. Of course, there were meetings with partners that will strengthen us. And a visit to Washington. President Biden, his team, Secretary Austin, General Brown. Congress – both chambers, both parties. Speaker Johnson. I heard words of respect for our people, for our fight. Important advice. Important agreements. I thank you all for your support. We will continue our work. And we expect the Congress to pass the necessary decision in the near future.

During a working trip to Lviv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored the memory of Ukraine’s defenders perished in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak and his deputies, as well as Head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration Maksym Kozytskyi, paid tribute to the fallen warriors together with the Head of State.
The President and the leadership of the Office of the President laid flowers at the graves of the heroes buried at the Field of Mars at the Lychakiv Cemetery. These are soldiers and sergeants fallen in battles with the Russian occupiers in the spring of 2022 and early 2023.
In particular, the participants of the ceremony honored the memory of Maksym Vasylkevych from Lviv, who performed combat missions in the ATO area in the east of Ukraine for three years, and after the full-scale invasion of Russia returned from abroad and fought the enemy as part of the 110th separate mechanized brigade named after General-Corporal Marko Bezruchko; Oleksiy Lion, a native of Rubizhne, Luhansk region, who fought as part of the 24th separate mechanized brigade named after King Danylo; Dmytro Sydoruk, an internationally recognized master of sports in archery, junior sergeant of the 24th separate mechanized brigade.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy also spoke with the mother of Lieutenant Pavlo Shcherbyna, who was the commander of a separate grenade launcher platoon, participated in the liberation of Kherson, and later fought in the Bakhmut sector. He perished on December 15, 2022.
The Lychakiv Military Cemetery is a military burial ground in Lviv. Since April 2022, the victims of the Russian-Ukrainian war are buried in its central part.

The complete transcript of yesterday’s Putin annual citizen call-in press conference will eventually be posted. Thus far there are only biased extracts from media that I suppose are intended to make their designated audience feel good and buy advertised products.
Looking past that, there are things factual to be noticed.
1. Putin sat there and responded for 4 hours. He has an election coming in March and this event was part of his election campaigning, but factually, 4 hours.
2. Ukraine was not the subject of the majority of questions. There were economy questions. There were AI questions. There were questions about the Olympics. Questions about China trade. There is a strong impression that Ukraine is no more important to daily life in Russia than Afghanistan was in the US for 20 years.
3. A question was asked him about further mobilization. He said: We did a partial mobilization in September of 300,000 men from our Reserves of over 10 million. Over 200,000 of these are in the Special Military Operation. We have seen over 400,000 men volunteer to join our armed forces since the start of the SMO. Because of that there is no current need for further mobilization of our Reserves. This may be incorrect and propaganda, but factually this is what he said. He did not say or claim or admit or brag or shout or whine anything different.
Note the numbers there. The pre-war info from the wiki notes that for decades Russia has done yearly conscription of all young men. There are various waivers, but in general for decades— universal conscription. The men have a one year term of enlistment, much of which is military training. At the end of the year they are returned to civilian life as part of the Reserves.
This is the 10 million number. Up to age whatever, 40 or 50 or whatever, they are in the Reserves. The mobilization is partial since all 10 million+ were not mobilized. This is pre war info. Factual.
