Men in the Middle East have worn long flowing robes for centuries.
Thobes or dishdashas protect the wearer from the brutal heat of the desert while maintaining modesty.
On Wednesday night, Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis called them 'man dresses,' mystifying or insulting a swath of the globe at a stroke.
Social media quickly lit up as users poked fun at his casual dismissal of the clothing worn by men in Iraq and much of the Middle East.
The bizarre moment came during the fourth Republican debate when DeSantis, the governor of Florida, was asked about his pledge to send troops to the southern border to shoot anyone crossing the border carrying the deadly drug fentanyl.
He compared it with his time when he served as a lawyer with the U.S. Navy.
'When I was in Iraq, al Qaeda wasn't wearing a uniform,' he said.
'You'd see anyone walking down the street ... they all had man dresses on.
'You didn't know if someone had a bomb, an [improvised explosive device] attached or not.
'And so you had to make a judgement based on intelligence ... based on positive identification.'
He may have been making an important point about how terrorists and drug smugglers blend into the local population.

Way to go Ron.
These people are silly and refuse to participate in decent society, and don't deserve to live among us. Some evidence (there is a lot) is their behavior on and after 10/7 and 9/11.
I only wish their men worked, so that they would encounter the occasional fast-moving factory fanbelt or gearbox with that clothing.
Maybe catch their beards in a flywheel too.
Alas, with their schedules you will never see that happen.
Nice surrender there, guy.
I’ve grown to dislike DeSantis, but oddly, I don’t have a problem with this !!!
I see nothing wrong or inaccurate about this statement.
-1 for jackasses who can’t call a man by his real name.
Eff the muzzies. Good for DeSantis.
I saw a video by Thomas Sowell 2-3 days ago and in it he makes the claim Obama was the most destructive and radical POTUS in history.
I was planning on posting it to FR…Assuming I can find it again.
The ManJam could also facilitate street defecation in San Francisco, just stand there and do it. No wasted movement and air dry at your leisure.
Nobody gets all wee we’ed up when someone calls a kilt a man skirt.
Fact is, they are. Even though they look kinda cool in Scottish history.
“Nobody gets all wee we’ed up when someone calls a kilt a man skirt.“
Wearers of kilts do tend to take offense at it being called a skirt.
It is still a skirt.
No fan of DeSantis, but I agree that it’s pretty gay for men to be wearing dresses, regardless of where they are in the world.
There’s more than one article from Pres. Trump’s first term about his apparent use of lifts and his height claims. Perhaps we should concentrate on policy/capability over appearance because elevator shoes don’t matter when it comes to the former.
True but you never hear a world wide outcry over it. lol
Muzzards are not able to take criticism or non serious jokes and jabs without getting offended.
Three words: Tiny Tom Daschle.
DeSantis has spent more time choosing footwear to try to hide his shortcomings than he has securing Florida’s elections.
Adams and Madison were shrimps.
And great patriots and presidents.
DeSantis is no Madison or Adams.
The author here much like Victor Davis Hansen like the one sentence paragraphs, easy to read for sure.
“No fan of DeSantis, but I agree that it’s pretty gay for men to be wearing dresses, regardless of where they are in the world.”
Two thousand years ago, all men wore robes and women wore pants.
In the Bible, that is why David was able to cut off Saul’s dress while he was in the cave with his private moment.
Men were told to gird themselved for action, which meant taking their belt that was around their waist and looping it between their groins in order to run and fight.
The Scottish kilt is a holdover from all that.
