DeSantis campaign projects optimism ahead of Republican debate, with time running out to catch Trump

There's less and less time for any of Donald Trump's rivals to convince Republican voters not to support the front-runner in the 2024 presidential primary that starts next month -- but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' campaign maintains that he is "riding a wave of momentum" going into Wednesday night's debate.

That's according to a new memo to donors and supporters that was obtained by ABC News.

"Only one candidate will be focused on fighting for, winning for, and leading the American people - and that candidate is Ron DeSantis," Uthmeier wrote.

Some who have won Iowa have not won the primary or general elections. So ... it really doesn’t matter.

Desanctimonius is very bad campigner. He just is. He hasn’t been adding and he has let Niki Haley define herself and him not to mention he let Trump define him. No push back in either case. If his goal is to keep the nomination from Trump (and that seems to be the case) he should back Birdbrain because she has proven to be a better campaigner.

Because he was so successful last time? He just keeps losing. I’m beginning to think that’s how Republicans like it.

Niki Haley’s campaign is 100 percent artificial. She is being propped up by global corporate donors only bc she is for sale. The polling is never accurate before any primaries have begun. There is no point in anyone going after her because everyone knows that she has a zero chance of getting any traction once people start to actually vote.

You calling her a birdbrain speaks for itself. Trump appointed her as his UN ambassador. Trump has disparaged most of his appointments he made while president, with insults directed at them as having low IQs and small brains.

The articles are written by residents of DC or surrounding states, NYC, or from California. As are campaign staff job occupants.

Debate the issues? Here were the 2016 issues:

Drain the Swamp
Build the Wall
American First In All Things

Those remain the issues. NOTHING HAS CHANGED, other than arrival of a virus that created VBM.

With those as the issues, how can DeSantis debate them, particularly item #1. How can there be a debate moderator, since they will be from the disallowed locales?

When DeSantis announces rejection of the party leadership Swamp, and all of his campaign staff, only then can he achieve qualification to debate Trump. Frankly even that won’t work because anyone with a political career is part of the Swamp. No exceptions.

I agree that DeSantis has not run a great campaign, but maybe the best possible in the circumstances. He's getting better, just look at his debate with Newsom. While Trump remains in and the favorite, all DeSantis can do is tread water. The first votes are still 40 days away. A lot can happen.

Haley is not qualified and is only being pushed by Trumpees to sideline DeSantis. They did the same with Ramaswamy until he self-destructed.

Trump currently has an insurmountable lead at the moment. But clearly it is a weak lead as Trump and supporters are clearly afraid of DeSantis. He is the natural candidate-in-waiting and may still, once voting starts, be competitive with Trump.

Trump has lots of continued misteps, his and supporter insults lose not gain votes. If it is Biden vs. Trump, Trump might win, but if it is anyone but Biden, Trump likely will lose.

Again 40 days until the first votes...

Like I have said before, there’s two constants...

1 desantis and his supporters lie about any and everything...

2 and they don’t care that they are lying

And I may have to add a 3rd - they are delusiional

I guess being competitive with Trump is the same as how desantis would be competitive

once desantis announces he’s running

once his campaign kicks off on twitter

once he starts his ground game, door knocking

once he has his reboot,

once he debates.

once he reboots his reboots... several times more

once he debates newsom
...
...

some people are delusional

This is the fewest number of debates I ever remember. Usually there are multiple in Iowa and New Hampshire in addition to the national ones. The RNC has steered into a crappy format this time.

The RNC should have North Korea host the debates—it will give them the “fair and objective” moderation they seek...

There could be 1000 days left. Desanctus isn’t a good candidate and the more I learn the more it makes sense to go with Haley over him because he’s just as much a stooge as she is but not good at campaigning. Trump is wisely not taking anything for granted. His strategic decision to continue attacking him is wise because there are only 3 people in the “race” who poll above 1 and of them only Desanctimonius has any appeal to the base and even that has been very much diminished. If this were a general election and the media was hammering him would he be just as quiet in response. He’s just watching Hillary Haley take his support and he still hasn’t had a response. An inability or unwillingness to adjust to changing realities isnt a good leadership quality and ia just as bad as a campaign strategy.

Aww, poor Ronnie. The mean orange man is “beating him down at every opportunity”. Poor guy. I guess Trump should be more sporting and let the guy win.

I was listening to Richard Baris today talking about how DeSantis’s focus on “values” issues as governor was primarily motivated by a desire to help him win the Iowa caucus, as Iowa voters tend to be more socially conservative than, say, New Hampshire or South Carolina.

It was always DeSantis’s ambition to run for president, and his courting of evangelicals was based on political calculation not on a particularly strong religious bent. Baris claims DeSantis and his wife rarely attend church, and relayed a story about how DeSantis had to send an aide out to buy a Bible for his swearing in ceremony. His point in bringing this up was not to trash him for being irreligious, but to point out his inauthenticity.
