College Football Playoff: Someone is going to be angry Five teams have legitimate cases. Only four teams will get a berth.

The Nightmare in Grapevine is upon us.

What is often a formality — making four obvious choices for the four-team College Football Playoff — is anything but for the committee this year.

The 13-member group, huddled in a hotel in Grapevine, Texas, will have to make the most consequential and controversial decision in its 10-year existence — and in the final season before the playoff expands to 12 teams. Their decision will be revealed at noon Sunday on ESPN.

Big Ten champion Michigan (13-0) and Pac-12 champion Washington (13-0) are assumed to be safely in. They’ll almost assuredly be the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively.

After that, there are three teams for two spots and there is no obvious answer.

So if we had the 12 team playoff this season, would Liberty have gotten in?

Shout out to SMU for winning their conference championship.

It will be interesting to see how they do in the ACC.

+1. How can Texas not be ahead of Bama, after beating them earlier in the year? Their dominant performance on Friday should be enough to put the Longhorns over the top.

Never had a tour of Gonzaga. First night on campus was spent at a kegger.

As was the second, third, and fourth nights. Keggers ever Friday & Saturday, too.

The Colonel also brought a keg of beer in after every ROTC exercise on Saturdays, he got soused with the rest of us. That was freshman year, the new Colonel after him stopped that.

Still, Gonzaga prepared me well for life in Germany. I was an anomaly, an American that could hang with the Germans. Lived off base for 4 years, in a Mosel town of Traben-Trarbach.

Although my GPA was a shade under 3, I graduated in 4 years with 141 semester hours, a BBA in Public Accounting, and unofficial minors in ROTC and Critical Thinking (thanks to the core curriculum).

You know, I am changing my prediction even though I’m a Bama fan, I think you are right.

There are 3 undefeated teams, all three won their conference.

Bama won their conference the SEC, and so did Texas? so probably Texas should be in there, since Texas beat Bama.

fsu played only 2 ranked opponents all year.

Bama played 4....including fsu’s best win (LSU) and UGA which is ranked far higher.

Also, fsu without their QB is toothless.

Too bad they can’t force a play in game between Bama and FSU, it’s what should happen
Too bad they can’t have a play in game between Bama and Texas.

They already did

I checked out the SEC standings: outside of GA and Bama, there were no elite teams in the SEC. Bama beat GA, and Bama lost to Texas (at home) by 10. Texas moves ahead, Bama and GA are out.

BTW, the Zags have reached the Sweet Sixteen the last 7 years. Who they schedule doesn't make a damn bit of difference to those Sweet 16s.

They spanked USC last night, and beat UCLA in Maui. That's the newest, biggest rivalry on the West Coast.

From what I've seen so far, this could be the most enjoyable Zags team to watch. They play hard every night, and the comments from the coaches and players all talk about their love to compete.

Looks like another enjoyable journey, I never worry about the destination.

Bama was lucky to beat Auburn. Bama lost to Texas by 10. Georgia barely beat Georgia Tech. Texas has improved significantly throughout the season. Texas deserves to be in.

Given the top six teams, here is the average (calculation) of their actual scoring against mutual opponents and each other.

Those last three will all have valid gripes.

hey should. In a REAL playoff for a REAL national championship, ALL conference champs would get an automatic bid (just like the NCAA basketball tournament).

I agree.

It makes it a mute point when a champiuonship bracket like the NCAA is closed to conferences that are not expected to be competitive by politics. They are there for cannon fodder for the ones the NCAA seeds in what are no minor bowls. I enjoy it when the little guys either beat them or scare hell out of them.

Notice there are basically half southeastern teams in the bracket in Georgia and Florida State. And where’s Liberty that went undeafeated this year and are listed at 24th? No Alabama? Didn’t they just beat Georgia? Politics and money, not playoffs.

In weeks 3 to 6, Texas had an increasing number of #1 votes in the AP poll. After their close loss to OU those went away, but Texas always remained ranked at least one spot ahead of Alabama. The pollsters thereby acknowledged that Texas’ win over Alabama was the difference maker.

With today’s poll raising Texas to 3 and Alabama now TWO spots back, it’s clear the pollsters still value that win highly and acknowledge that Texas has improved as much or more than Alabama as the season wrapped up.

Texas is in. Alabama and Georgia are out.

In the 12 team, the top 6 ranked conference champs will get auto bids, so assuming Liberty gets the Nee Years game slot, yes, they would be in with the new format.

Between Texas and Alabama: Texas beat Alabama head to head; and, Texas has the country’s highest strength of schedule.
