Among classic rock fans, “Freebird” is iconic for several reasons:

1. It’s one of the defining anthems of the distinctive “southern rock” genre.

2. It’s a sentimental connection to the original Lynyrd Skynyrd, before the 1977 plane crash that took the lives of three band members and several others.

3. There’s something epic about seeing concert videos from the 1970s when Ronnie Van Zant dedicates their performance of the song to fellow southern rock legend, the late Duane Allman.

Personally, I think “Freebird” is eclipsed by “Tuesday’s Gone” as the greatest Lynyrd Skynyrd song ever.

The Allman Brothers released several live versions of “Blue Sky” that were 10+ minutes long. They are arguably the best live band of all time.

Great song.

An old boyfriend called me Miss American Pie because I was so patriotic, even back then. I wasn’t so sure about the levy and the good old boys drinking whiskey and rye cuz I didn’t drink.

I remember first hearing it during art class in 8th grade during late 1971. The girl who brought in her 45s would have to get up and flip it to play the full song.

Here's what is likely the most morbid 8+ minutes song:

Let me guess. You’re not an Allman Brothers Band fan, either? Nor Marshall Tucker Band, or a few others I could name?

If you don’t get Southern jam bands, that’s OK.

I recently watched a Steely Dan documentary. The extremes they went to get the right artist, to get the right note, mixed perfectly, were unreal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking it, love the results. But as a non-musician, I can’t even really begin to understand the process they went through to get where they got.

I’m pretty sure this is it.

I've heard of those groups, but I'm not very familiar with their music. I haven't had much exposure to Southern jam bands--a genre that I need to get more familiar with, since it seems to have a lot of fans on this site.

I'm a big fan of bands like Waring's Pennsylvanians, Phil Spitalny's Music and the Coon-Sanders Nighthawks.

I keep apersonal Top 10 chart which changes periodically. Have You Forgotten? by Ted Wallace & His Campus Boys is currently at #1, having recently knocked off Dream a Little Dream of Me, which has sat at the top of the chart for most of the year.

I post a lot of tunes like these on the music threads posted on this site by Fatima, Kathy in Alaska and Luvie.

I have that DVD - it’s quite interesting how Fagen/Becker put each song together “just” the way they envisioned the end product.

The new remaster of Aja by Bernie Grundman is getting rave reviews.

Additionally, his new remaster of Gaucho is now available and, coming soon, the Bernie’s remasters of Royal Scam and Katy Lied.

Both remasters available on CD, Hi-Rez 24-bit download and vinyl as is the entire SD catalogue.
