Daryl Hall has accused his longtime music partner John Oates of committing the “ultimate partnership betrayal” by planning to sell his share of the Hall & Oates duo’s joint venture without the other’s permission, Hall said in a court declaration supporting his lawsuit to keep the transaction paused.
In the declaration filed Wednesday in a Nashville chancery court, Hall also lamented the deterioration of his relationship with and trust in his musical partner of more than a half-century. The joint venture in question includes Hall & Oates trademarks, personal name and likeness rights, record royalty income and website and social media assets, the declaration states.
In his own court filing later Wednesday, Oates said that he was disappointed in Hall’s “inflammatory, outlandish, and inaccurate statements about me,” and argued that he had been trying for some time to enhance their business partnership.
A judge has issued a temporarily restraining order blocking the sale of Oates’ share of Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave IP Investment Management LLC while legal proceedings and a previously initiated arbitration continue. …

I always wondered if they were a bit ‘too close’.
I’m sure they had a gay old time
I’m not sure Hall doesn’t just buy Oates’ half, if he’s so concerned about who controls it.
Personally, I think that Oates is smarter to sell it than to assume his music will have value in just a few years.
If the guy wants to sell out what’s the problem? If hall wants to come up with the money and buy him out fine. The question is what did the contractor a partnership agreement sale in that? If Hall head right of first refusal it, and it was offered to him and he didn’t want to, but then I assume that the clause would let oates sell out to another party at whatever price he could get for it he probably wants to cash out and reinvest the money for his family, so what’s the problem? Probably has more to do with estate planning than it does anything else as far as personalities go. Hall, evidently is taking this personally for some reason, and he’s willing to find his lawyers to the point of idiocy.
Exactly what I think of when they are mentioned.
Cannot recall anything about their music, just a zero.
I recall hearing about members of Creedence Clearwater Revival sueing each other for over 20 years. The main singer wanted to sing some of their hits, on which he had lead vocal. Somebody in the group refused to allow it for a long time. Probably somebody who’s vouce was never good enough to lead a song.
Dude! John Fogerty was sued by his brother dan forgerty because john fogerty wrote all the songs and the music for CCR, and when JOHN started his solo career, john sounded too much like CCR! John had SIGNED away the rights to CCR to a really shady manager. and the manager is the one who told Dan to sue his own brother for stealing the CCR SOUND.
Why would anyone think that?
What a waste of time.
I’m reading between the lines here. Since they parted ways, Daryl has continued to advance his career and has had some resurgence through platforms such as ‘Daryl ‘s House’ and touring with Todd Rundgren. My guess is that they had a verbal agreement formed over many years with a tight partnership and a very successful run. Daryl, wanting to keep his career alive needs the unfettered access to the H&Os library. Perhaps John had said he’d keep holding those rights to give Daryl the room to continue. Once John has decided to sell, it puts Daryl’s access to the library in jeapordy, something John may have said he’d never do. But,, when the money dries up, you gotta cash in the assets and it must be call time for John. Daryl is likely hurt and hoping he can draw it out a little to maybe find another option.
Too funny! I never saw any of these covers, but they did sound gay, which is what I based my comment on.
Hall should then buy Oats out.
Hall ate Oates?
I could agree with you there.
That would indicate that one or both of them are incapable of introspection.
"I can't look at the good things that came out of this collaboration because I don't have the mental capacity to reflect on these things. Muh phallus."
That act of Dan suing his brother John probably destroyed that family. I didn’t realize the betrayal was that close to home. Lawyers don’t csre, so long as they get a big payday.
Such a shame. They did some great work.
I think I heard the great duo Sam & Dave always disliked each other.
Just helps you see that fame and wealth cannot buy you true happiness.
