The older the wiser. Do you know why West Coast beaches are usable? Because offshore drilling released the pressure and ended the natural seepage that would spoil the shoreline. Before drilling you could expect to have a smelly and nasty day at the beaches of California. Inconvenient facts are always memory-holed.

When we were kids, we used to walk the beaches from Santa Monica down to San Clemente and get our feet sometimes sticky from the oil seepage. Natural. Long before oil tankers off the coast in SoCal. Then there's those La Brea Tar Pits, which no climate activists and no “Just Stop Oil” jackasses have protested.

Freedom,
There are good early historical accounts of the Indians in So. California sealing their canoes with tar that was found abundantly on the beaches in early Spanish California.

In Santa Barbara you can see the oil seeping from the cliff face down to thru the beach. There are balls of oil globs on the beach. There is a million gallons per year seeping in the channel offshore every year forever.
