My daughter just told me about a YouTube ad she was served that connected her to a scam website.
That could imply that YouTube (and its owner Google) is coming under revenue pressure, possibly due to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT has gotten much better in the past few months. I was given a demonstration Monday morning of how ChatGPT was able to write a Python script to test a fairly complex Python program that does advanced image processing.
Someone in my company used the paid version of ChatGPT to write the script in just a few seconds; it would have taken him half a day to write it by hand.
I was impressed by this, and I remarked that such a high-quality abstraction capability could be used to do very good web searches.
He said that ChatGPT is being used by more and more people instead of Google for web search.
ChatGPT is one of a class of algorithms called a "Large Language Model. It is 49% owned by Microsoft.
Amazingly, I got this demo Monday morning, and here on Wednesday I hear that YouTube is serving skeevy ads.
Some of you may know that YouTube has strongly cracked down on "ad blockers" in recent weeks.
YouTube has always been pretty good about their ad policy. I’ve noticed they’ve gotten somewhat sleazier in recent days. You can’t skip ads as much as you used to, and they now have longer “mandatory” (i.e. unskippable) ads.
Could be another indication of trouble at the Googleplex.
The same viewer profiling technology that connects high-end content ads to high-end viewers can also be used to find large populations of easily scammable dummies.
Political implications here.
Thanks for that.
Love Brave.
I have an add blocker and haven’t seen an add on youtube in a couple years. I have seen warnings stating google doesn’t allow add blockers, which I ignore.
Youtube won’t let me watch their videos on Google Chrome unless I disable my ad blocker or subscribe to their paid service. I can still get it on the Microsoft browser.
I’ve stayed away from Chrome because I assume everything from Google is spyware.
I don’t know what ‘high-quality abstraction capability’ is, or why it means better web searches. Oy vey! Maybe I need to put that into ChatGPT to get an answer.
Here's a question that requires it: "Which composer is like Beethoven on steroids?"
Or "What kind of person is best suited to fly the F-22?"
Gotta link that explains it?
Good example !
Get the free uBlock Orgin https://ublockorigin.com/
I have the shortcut on my Firefox toolbar. I can turn it on or off.
Ads are blocked at youtube.
