There is also cornmeal and Plaster of Paris in covered container near a water source. It sets up in the GI Tract hopefully making them slower than the things that like to eat them.

If that's all you want, put down a bowl of dried potato flakes and a bowl of water next to it. The critters fill up on potato flakes and then drink the water - and split wide open.
