I see; it is a box cage trap - Havahart. I was curious how to not 'manually' open the door... according to the video you have to be at the opposite end of the trap from the trap door and manually pull up on the handle. I agree that with that sort of release it would be helpful to have a cover on the trap so the trapped animal only sees an open exit, not the 'trapper' - until it has run free.
Humane trapping is good, but the release can be perilous - especially with larger animal traps. Wild cats and bears may want to wreak some revenge on their captors; skunks I don't know, never trapped those. 🤔 I have caught possums once or twice and just opened the door for them to back out; they aren't really aggressive.
Have a trashcan full of water, throw trap in it for 30 minutes, if he lives name him Houdini and let him go. Otherwise they make a good starter for a tree.
With the cheaper traps, you have to pull the trap door up with your hands. That means you are on the business end when the animal runs out.
This trap has a protective metal panel under the handle so that the coon can’t grab or bite you. Your hands aren’t on the trap door since you pull it open from above. It’s much safer than the regular live traps. I have used both.
Oh, and they make a special trap for skunks. I don’t know what a person would do if they trapped a skunk in a wire trap.
