Jets legend Joe Namath is akin to disgraced Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, covering up sexual abuse at his facility, according to court papers filed by a man who says he was assaulted there 51 years ago.
Philip Lyle Smith, 64, recently told The Post about his horrific ordeal at a Joe Namath Instructional Football Camp, speaking publicly for the first time about claims he detailed as “John Doe’’ in an ongoing Brooklyn lawsuit.
Smith said his alleged sexual predator was well-known Brooklyn Poly Prep Country Club football coach Philip Foglietta, later revealed to be a serial pedophile who abused scores of students at the tony school.
Foglietta, who died in 1998, was allegedly allowed to repeatedly sexually attack Smith at the camp starting when the boy was just 12, said the married Florida real-estate broker in court papers — claiming to The Post that Namath and other lawsuit defendants were “enablers and the pedophile protectors.”
“Back in those days, Joe Namath was my idol,’’ Smith told The Post. “And he went from my hero to a zero in my life.’’
Smith alleged that Namath’s negligence is analogous to that of the late Paterno, who was accused of knowing that trusted assistant Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused young boys.
“This case is equally about the many adults in positions of power at the [camp] including Joe Namath and [ex-Jets defensive back and camp partner John] Dockery, who were aware of, tolerated and covered up known sexual abuse at the camp, abuse that had a lasting effect on Doe,’’ according to allegations in amended court papers filed in 2021.
Smith’s lawsuit claims that while Foglietta groomed and abused him, he received special perks at the camp, including involving the Jets Hall of Famer.

You’re twelve years old, and first were ‘groomed’ with all sorts of special favors and attention. Then one night, your ‘friend’ closes the deal by shoving his d!ck up your a@@ and cuming in it. More special favors and attention. You’re in shock about what happened last night, and have nobody to talk to about it. So you don’t talk to anyone, and it continues, both the grooming and the abuse, and you learn things about sex that are utterly bewildering and make you feel ashamed and frightened. Your dad picks you up from the camp. “Did you have a good time, son?” You nod and try to smile. Next year, you’re back, secretly dreading it, but resigned, and resolved to keep this a secret.
He alleges there was a cover-up, so the secret gets out somehow, at least among the staff, and covered up, allegedly with Namath’s participation per the amended complaint of 2021. Assuming it’s true: Maybe you’re relieved at the time that there’s a cover-up. You don’t want your friends to know. They’ll start calling you ‘faggot’. How will this play with girls, in whom you’re now interested, if they know you were somebody’s butt boy, maybe even put it in your mouth. You grow up and get married. You don’t tell your new bride about this. She might never know. You don’t tell your children as they pass through puberty. It takes years to get over these things and talk about it.
Some never do. At some point, he did. Now he’s gunning for Namath, who’s 80 and no billionaire. I’m inclined to at least hear the case, and as I’ve mentioned, OJ and others have turned me off to celebrities.

The key question is, Did Joe Know and cover it up?
That’s going to be really hard to prove.
I’ve been very squeamish about letting my 13-yo son spend time anywhere overnight. It’s always been with family. One retreat at his Christian school. But there is no doubt in my mind that this should be kept to a minimum by everyone. I may be mistaken, but I think grooming includes the abusers’ getting away with something “small,” and then they use the shame to keep them quiet, and it escalates. Maybe the child questions whether it is something they they are doing wrong. Too young to really understand how devastating these events are to their future spiritual well-being. Damage that’s darn near permanent. Sad. Pray that Jesus will heal them through His amazing grace.

You lie when you said I lied. I only posted fact from the appeal decision.
There were allegations from 100 different women, all recorded for posterity. The conviction was overturned. But saying that that ends the matter is like saying Pollard only spied for Israel, just because that was the case brought against him, or Jeff Epstein only doinked the one (two?) underaged girls with whom he was charged, jailed, and then Arkancided.
Such a thing as the tip of the iceberg. It has no bearing on the court case, but court cases are not the limits of reality, just the limits of what the criminal justice system can or will do about that reality.
And watch your mouth.

Smith said Joe SHOULD have known. No indication he was involved in abuse.
Joe’s involvement was photos and some football tosses. Not exactly abuse considering it was a football camp.
From Socrates on down to Voltaire’s Candide (the pedigree of the “best of all possible venereal diseases”), there is a long record of grown men misusing boys, and also of girls as young as four being interfered with by boys as young as 12. And there have been plenty of institutional cover-ups. Don’t trust anyone with your kids that you don’t know real well.
