2. Repeatedly invaded their neighbors, even after issuing solemn promises of friendship
3. Repeatedly published and expanded on Dugin’s bullcrap about Slavic unity with power concentrated in Moscow, as if Eastern Europe wants another ethnonationalist empire like Hitler’s Aryans
4. Repeatedly used cyber warfare against Eastern Europe and further afield - there’s barely a single healthcare system in the western world that Russian malware/ransomware hasn’t hit. Jeez, they keep hitting American companies and states and for fifteen years y’all have done sweet Fanny Adams about it. The Islamists attacked America once and the neocons went medieval on them but when Russia attacks the USA it’s all “don’t poke the bear, mmkay.”
5. Threatened even France and Sweden with nuclear retaliation when neither of them have taken a strong anti Russian position
6. Lies incessantly about their justifications for it all.
We didn’t goad Putin into war by confronting him. He did it entirely by himself because he thinks we’re soft.
All of it stems from him being furious that the Belovezha Accords and the disestablishment of the Warsaw Pact led to countries he irrationally thought loved Mother Russia started flocking to EU/NATO.
The more they did it the more postal Putin got.
The Belorussian people voting Lukashenko (Mad Vlad Putin’s only lubed up bum chum still in power) out of office, and Ukraine sending Yanukovych (Putin’s paid-for Lukashenko wannabe) packing. The west didn’t react decisively to Russian meddling in both cases. But we didn’t react to the prior invasion of Georgia, or the razing of Chechnya, or the assassination of several senior Polish figures, or the attempted assassination of Yuschenko, or the assassinations on British streets.
“Don’t poke the bear” winning no matter how far the bear was willing to go in testing its boundaries was the biggest foreign policy mistake of the last thirty years.
Putin’s political allies and his media have been threatening the Baltic countries, Finland, Poland, Romania, Moldova, because they’re completely convinced that we’ll just let them have their way.
They can’t see why Russification is about as popular as the bubonic plague, and their solution to this isn’t soft power or hearts and minds; their solution is MORE Russification.
Beating Russia isn’t just about beating ethnonationalist bullshit, it’s about beating stupid. Putin, if he’s still alive, would benefit a lot from reading Aesop’s fable about the sun and the wind.
Russia doesn’t make anything that the west would ever want to buy, and it still isn’t selling a single thing that Europe wants, except gas. But after fifteen years of attacking even its best customers, nobody wants to be their customer.
