The spike in interest in all things related to Matthew Perry includes a nearly five-minute excerpt of an interview with Bill Maher where the deceased actor talks about a near-death experience, his belief in God and the "math" that was involved to feed his drug habit.
"I believe there is a higher power. I believe I have a very close relationship with him that's helped me a lot," Perry said on Real Time with Bill Maher in November 2022 while promoting his book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
"A lot of people did have you in the 'dead pool.' Maybe you," Maher tells Perry in the five-minute clip, which Newsweek has embedded in this story.

Perry had a male “personal assistant” that lived with him over 30 years, according to the Daily Mail.

I didn’t know he had a drug habit. Just another reminder that drugs kill and only Jesus saves.
She wasn’t his PA at the time. She was with him or employed by him for seven years — she is 34 years old and he credits her with being his anchor during his hospitalization for drug damage some years ago.
The theory is that since his body was compromised by alcohol & drugs in the past, it was very easy for his blood pressure to drop while in it & he either drowned or just died due to the drop in pressure.
Reportedly he had prescription Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) drugs in his house. COPD drugs are prescribed for people with chronic breathing diseases, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis (no recreational use). He was a life long chain smoker so it would be surprising if he did not have a lung disease.
