Includes a 3.6 liter V6 to power on-board electric generator. The engine has no mechanical coupling to the drive train.

Nothing to go wrong here.

The Prius actually works like that, so it can be done.

But I wouldn’t trust Chrysler with that level of complexity. Especially a brand new model.

Why do they need a generator that large?

That’s how diesel-electric locomotives work. Also giant dumptrucks at strip mines etc. It’s not unproven technology, but a neighborhood mechanic won’t usually have the knowledge; you’d have to go to a railroad maintenance facility.

The word is that Mazda will do something similar with a rotary engine, which makes sense as rotary engines are light and work even better if they get to operate at a constant speed.

Yeah ... like nobody ever tried a drive train like that in Diesel-Electric submarines. Or Diesel-Electric locomotives.

Oh no ...

It’s totally untried and crazy.

If its a diesel engine, it could be just a standard diesel-electric. They've been running trains like this for ages. I've supported this idea for a long time. Let the diesel run at it's optimum, and most efficient generating speed, and you really have the best of both worlds. The torque of electric, and the reliability/economy of diesel. No batteries required.

American railway diesel locomotives drive generators that power electric motors
