If you thought “Eternals” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” were low points for the limping Marvel Cinematic Universe, strap in for the ride to abject misery that is “The Marvels.”
The interminable movie, barely directed by Nia DaCosta, is not so much the story of Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau as it is a sad study of the downfall of America’s favorite screen franchise.
Once again, we get an MCU film that’s littered with insider technobabble and is impossible to follow.
Once again, we get an MCU film featuring characters we don’t care a lick about even though they beg us to, like meowing cats at feeding time.
Once again, we get an MCU film that we’re told cost $270 million to make yet appears as pricey as a Season 5 episode of “Stargate SG-1.”
Once again, we trudge out at the end an MCU film — the 33rd! — moaning, “How much longer can this godforsaken cinematic universe possibly drag on?”

Tamlyn Tomita.
I was a fan of the original MCU and have thought that the string of films was just excellent at connecting one film and storyline to the next film, etc. It made for a great epic, winding up with End Game. After that, I was pretty much done with the MCU. I went to see The Eternals, bleh. Tried Black Widow, bleh. I did enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy III; but, that was to see the end of that series, also part of the MCU.
However, the inclusion of Captain Marvel in the original MCU storyline was NOT a fave of mine. I actually dislike Brie Larsen as an actress and I think her acting in the MCU movies that she was in was just wooden, at best. So, even if I have finished my time with the MCU prior to this, that Brie Larsen was in this movie was no temptation to try this one. Nope, done.
I’ve only seen #1.
If I had to choose between the 2 for a GF is a problem I’d love to have,
One of the reviewers said Disney was giving free drinks out to those watching. He also said when a studio does that, you KNOW they have a lemon on their hands!
From all I’ve read and scene from industry insiders, this film needs to make $750m to break even. Won’t break $200m
Original captain marvel, was a WHITE GUY in a green “suit”
Then HE was a blond WHITE GUY with power bans.
Then to wrap things up in end game, Disney/ABC/Marvel slapped a vagina and boobs on the character then made her way way more powerful than the original. I agree, she was terrible.
What I don’t remember was did Ms Marvel PMS stand alone movie come before end game or after?
The big thing happened when Disney started not paying the royalties on the property they bought. And they would make you sign a NDA before they would talk to you about the fact that "screw your contract with 20th Century Fox, Lucas Films or what ever, we have no obligation to pay you, we just bought the rights not the responsibilities".
Now of course that is not true but when you were looking at taking on the biggest bully on the block, you could not go to the media (NDA remember) and the reason that you asked about the royalties was you needed the money you were kind of up a creek.
This was whispered about in the writing community, especially SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association) but nothing that you could really nail down.
And then Alan Dean Foster got sick. And he tried to make sure his estate was in order so his wife would be taken care of. And he discovered what Disney was doing. ADF had written tie-in books for decades and his contracts were written most carefully because he know what kind of snakes ran the studios. So he KNEW that he was in the right and Disney was in the wrong. So he told them what they could do with their NDA and went to war. And won.
But now the whispers were shown to be correct. If you were a writer for Disney you were not going to get paid. So it is not your imagination. The quality of writing has gone down hill because good writers refuse to work for Disney.
They have only themselves to blame.
I believe that the stand alone came after End Game. Could be wrong, but, I think it was after.
Ditto!
This goes back decades. When The Jungle Book animated movie was first released, they did so right after the copyright expired, so they wouldn't have to pay royalties, and also so Kipling's estate had no say in what they did with the characters.
Now they act like the own the story. (Much like Pooh). Yes, the company that has lobbied extensively for effectively eternal copyright only respects copyright when it is their interest.
Like I said, they are a bunch of cheapskates that will take advantage of every loophole. But this was a little beyond that. They were in essence making new law. Granted not for the first time. But they were maintaining that if a company was bought by another that all contracts made with the first company were void.
You invent widget, license widget to company, company reincorporates under new name, does not have to pay you a dime. They have the rights but no obligations.
So if Disney were to reincorporate as Mouse Enterprises Inc, they could keep all rights but would not need to pay anything to anybody.
Where can I find a woman-
Where can I find a woman like that?
Like Daniel-san's girl
Japanese girl from Karate Kid 2, Tamlyn Tomita
it was terrible. nothing after end game was good
I rather liked he TV show “Ms. Marvel” with Iman Vellani. It was fun, and didn’t seem to take itself too seriously.
Brie Larson just seems to be constipated the entire time she’s on the screen. I (accidentally, because I had it on in the background) listened/watched Captain Marvel last night, and it was boring BECAUSE of her.
I’ll end up watching this - but only for Iman Vellani, but not at the theater. I’ll wait til it’s on Disney+. Until I cancel that subscription because it costs too much.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if they tried to do that.
He was talking about Sicilians, not (mainland) Italians.
