I think it is odd that so many worry about Ukrainian elections when their opponents have had the same dictator for nearly a quarter of a century. I guess Putin, since he is old-style KGB, can be excused of everything including the murder of his main political opponent in the heart of Moscow.

“Even opposition political figures discourage any attempt to hold elections under Russian attack.

Political analysts note that a presidential vote as scheduled next March would give extraordinary advantages to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, letting him use his wartime boost in popularity (an 82 % approval rating in the new IRI poll) to lock in a new five-year term.”

- Dmytro Razumkov, a parliament member with an opposition party who is discussed by analysts as a possible presidential candidate, told Politico in September that in part because “a huge amount of territory is either under occupation, or the infrastructure there is destroyed,” Ukraine has “no possibility to organize the election process on the ground” during the war.
