I am reading a book called “The Fourth Turning” written over 25 years ago, and boy...is it ever disconcerting.
Basically, history runs in roughly 80 year cycles (called a “saeculum” by the Romans, who were aware of this cycle) with a 20 year equilibrating cycle before the next one begins. It is unsettling to read.
I wonder if race swapping Snow White and thinking about a black Hercules might’ve been a big final straw.
The Disney thing, I think, is a big sign. If they give it up, I’m pretty sure that’s the end. There are some executive things going on there now, Peltz and all, that might really matter.
This is the cycle in a nutshell:
Hard Times make Good Men
Good Men make Good Times
Good Times make Weak Men
Weak Men make Hard Times
Curious! Thanks for posting — I wasn’t aware of that book or the theory. Can you tell me if the turnings are cyclical (1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4, etc) or are they palindromic (1,2,3,4,3,2,1,2,3,4, etc)? My curiosity is getting the best of me here.
I don’t know quite what to make of it, but it’s a fascinating concept
I keep seeing references to that, and get the concept. I need to read it.
