I recall it happening in the NHL some years back. A goalie got slashed across his throat, even with the guard on. Rapid medical care helped save his life.

My son plays. High School teams mandate rigid neck guards for all skaters. Ive seen kids get ejected from important games for discarding them during the game. The dangers are real. Skates are knives on your feet and a scrum at the net can get pretty physical.

When my brother was in high school, this happened to a hockey goalie at his school.
Perhaps the roughest. Even aside from the sharpened skate blades. Honestly surprised things like this don't happen more often. Sincere condolences to the family.
“1000 Ways to Die” was TV show about all the weird ways folks left this place.

I had my kids wear neck guards during youth hockey. They protested a little, but not much.

I am so sad over this. Perhaps neck guards made out of the same metallic chain fabric as Cut Gloves for use in pro kitchens to prevent kitchen accidents with cutting machines? Rest in Peace young man. Heartbreaking.
