No mystery, the North had 4 times the manpower advantage over them, and that's before they dragooned the Irish off of the boats to force them into the Union army.
The mystery is why it took the North so long to beat a group 1/4th their size. I would say it was because they were fighting for their homeland, while the North was just following orders.
