Cruelty to animals is the sure sign of a sociopath. There was a kid in my elementary school who was cruel to cats. Years later we learned he sunk a kitchen knife in to another boy killing him.
These types are not redeemable by human standards. 50 years should cool his heals, if he survives, and if he gets out all we can hope is he is too old and weak to harm anyone else.

I don’t think a prolonged prison sentence is the right way to deal with this and similar crimes.
Unprovoked attacks on other humans, WHETHER OR NOT THEY RESULT IN RAPE, DEATH, OR PERMANENT INJURY, should be punished either by death or permanent removal from the community to a location where they can live, unsupervised, with others of their own kind.
I first thought of this when I read of the sexual assault and murder of an 11 year old girl in Florida. The murderer had a long rap sheet, but the key was his first arrest.
He grabbed a woman, hit her in the head with a rock, and dragged her into the woods to rape her. She fought him off and escaped, and because she was not raped or dead, he pled down to something like jaywalking and was let go.
That type of crime is very different from financial swindles, drug offenses, burglary, stealing, etc.
The first time someone slams a woman in the head with a rock and tries to rape her, the perp self-identifies as unfit to live among us. If he had been put down, as he should have been, that little girl would be alive today.
And putting us on the hook for a long prison term is very unfair. It’s expensive, he will hurt other people - prisoners and guards alike - and when he gets out he will do something bad again.
Maybe a 16 year old like this guy in the headline should have physical punishment instead of death - 200 lashes or the like, and maybe death or my prison colony for a second offense - but prison is not the answer.
He’s eligible for a judicial review of his sentence in five years. No doubt some bleeding-heart parole board or Judge will eventually cut this kid loose, so he can go on another murdering rampage, and none of them will ever be held accountable for it.

Was the 5 year old girl a hoe? If so, maybe he has a defense.
