My top 3,
Night of the Living Dead, 1968
Phantasm, 1979
The Exorcist, 1973
Why does "the Shining" always make the list, it was boring.
The first two I saw at a classic american drive-in.

The age you are when viewing certain movies changes the effect.
I saw The Shining and Jaws when I was young.
Your father trying to murder you and teeth ripping you to pieces works on youth.
Scariest as an adult, Madam Secretary. Imagine a woman in charge of America…

Psycho. It is truly scary because it could actually happen.

It’s not a horror movie. But when you think about it, it’s pretty scary nonetheless.

You are exactly right.
As an 11 year old watching the Shining, I found it quite scary. The twins, the freaky ghost woman in the room he makes out with, the “redrum”. So I always put it near the top.
