The Herpes Scare
Washington Post ^ | 1/16/85 | Washington Post Staff Writer

Most of the people who are terrified of catching herpes already have it. Herpes -- which has been dubbed "the epidemic of the '80s" -- is one of the most common viruses known, causing a wide range of illnesses from chicken pox to cold sores. Highly publicized cases have caused panic in communities across the country recently, the latest involving a 3-year-old Anne Arundel County child.

But virologists and public health experts say that while concern over herpes is warranted, hysteria is not.

Strangely, for some reason, I have NO fear of herpes.

I wonder why that would be?

They said “Anyome can get AIDS!”

However, there was something that would increase the risk by about 100 times.

"is one of the most common viruses known, causing a wide range of illnesses from chicken pox to cold sores"

Deceptive newswriting was happening even in 1985. Yes, chicken pox is a form of herpes, but it's not the same form that causes the permanent, incurable venereal disease.

There may be a side benefit. When it breaks out the body goes on the defense. During this defense growing cancers may be attacked that would have otherwise gone unopposed. Since Herpes never goes away completely it might very well be saving those infected from Cancer.

You don’t have to get laid to get herpes. Merely a kiss at the right time to an already infected person is enough.

Those Were the Days
/
Lyrics
… Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
Think of all the great things we would do?
… Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
La-la-la-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, la-da-da-da-da
… Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I’d see you in the tavern
We’d smile at one another and we’d say
… Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
La-la-la-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da
… Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me?
… Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
La-la-la-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da
… Through the door, there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we’re older but no wiser
For in our hearts, the dreams are still the same
… Those were the days, my friend
We thought they’d never end
We’d sing and dance forever and a day
We’d live the life we choose
We’d fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days
La-la-la-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
La-la-la-da-da-da
Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da
… La-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la

To the original author:

Have someone give you herpes, then see if it warrants hysteria. People take other people to court for giving them permanent diseases.

Well, that is Oral Herpes.

Genital Herpes is a bigger sore and can be caught in the head region, but normally, the two forms stay where they “should.”
