It's simply the word meaning as it ended up in Hebrew. Nothing sketchy.

The modern word is an Arabic acronym which is then transliterated into Hebrew. Not mentioned is that Hamas the terrorist organization is spelled with an alef [חמאס], as seen here. That's not really an issue though; it doesn't need one. I'd suspect it's there to differentiate it from a regular Hebrew word.
