Firearms are not the only tool available to defend against bear attacks. Blades and blunt objects have been effective in a number of recorded cases. Unlike bear spray or firearms, when someone defends against a bear with a blade or a blunt object, it tends to make the news.
Traditionally, bears were hunted with spears and dogs. Humans with spears, partnered with dogs, are very difficult for a bear to successfully overcome. Some human and dog casualties result, with dog casualties much more common than humans. Spears give humans a necessary stand-off distance to keep them away from a bear’s teeth and claws. Dangerous prey spears usually have a cross piece to keep the prey from reaching the human at the other end.
Two or more humans with spears are nearly as effective as a human and dog pack team.
There have been several cases of humans using hatchets/axes to successfully defend against bears.
Several people have successfully defended against attacking bears by using knives. Even relatively small knives are better than bare hands. In Bear Attacks, the Deadly Truth, page 129, Bob Nickols killed a grizzly bear with a knife, as it badly mauled him. He survived. The bear died. Larger knives are better. Tom Tilley gained fame for killing an aggressive black bear with a six-inch Buck knife. It seems likely sharp swords could work well.

Weingarten with Cold Steel Boar Spear, suitable for dangerous game Spear is 7 feet long
Svalbard mentioned in the article is a funny place. Carrying a rifle is mandatory and cats are banned.
“Firearms are not the only tool available to defend against bear attacks.”
That’s very comforting, but that’s the “tool” I am using, should the need ever arise.
What about cats with rifles?..................
Boar hunting spears are probably the best, since the cross guard prevents the bear from rushing the target as is their instinct to, even though it impales itself in the process.
They are also allowed to carry shotguns and pistols of sufficient power.
Europe is pushing them to make pistol carry harder.
Mandatory carry is only for outside the town limits.
Can I use the ex? Always wanted to do that.
The problem with cats is that Svalbard doesn’t have trees so the birds make their nests on the ground.
For a cat it is all-you-can-kill-buffet (not all-you-can-eat, because cats don’t stop killing birds even when their stomachs are full).
They’re hunting Boar with them in Texas.
The bear brings 20 claws and 42 teeth to the fight.
Now that’s a spear.
The critical factor is hunting in a group.
Three guys with spears is very different than one guy with a spear.
Can I use the ex? Always wanted to do that.

As long as you can run faster….
But a spear is better than a knife or an axe.
Men with spears and dogs are almost unbeatable.
Grizzly bears are probably the most difficult because of their aggressive nature and size.
Is a 41 Mag hard cast flat nose considered a blunt object?
Provided you can prove some proficiency with it, a .41 magnum works in Svalbard. IIRC is the smallest acceptable pistol caliber but comes with some load restrictions. Not quite a .44 magnum but anything hit by a .41 mag with a heavy load isn't really going to notice the difference.
Who was the FReeper who did that? Defending his dog against a black bear, as I recall, but I'm blanked on the name.
Is that part of your EDC kit?
😆
There is a dude on YouTube who hunts bear and boars with spears like that- grizzlies too. Can’t remeber his name right now though- he also, shoots ducks and geese out of the air with bow and arrow- he’s a phenomenal hunter.
