Not getting enough sleep? Your vascular cells may be drowning in oxidants, says study

Does this sound like you? You wake up at the same time each morning, get the kids out the door, and rush to catch the subway to work. But at night, maybe you stay up until midnight doing laundry or 1 a.m. to catch up on the bills.

Many Americans—about one-third of us—are in the same situation and habitually get only five to six hours of sleep instead of the recommended seven to eight hours.

But even a mild chronic sleep deficit may heighten the risk of developing heart disease later in life: Surveys of thousands of people have found that people who report mild but chronic sleep deficits have more heart disease later in life than people who get adequate sleep.

A study of women now shows what's happening in the body during chronic mild sleep deprivation.

After just six weeks of shortened sleep, the study found, the cells that line our blood vessels are flooded by damaging oxidants. And unlike well-rested cells, sleep-restricted cells fail to activate antioxidant responses to clear the destructive molecules.

The result: cells that are inflamed and dysfunctional, an early step in the development of cardiovascular disease.

Previous studies did not examine chronic sleep deficits

Studies of human sleep have examined the physiological effects of a few nights of profound sleep deprivation.

The researchers screened nearly 1,000 women in Washington Heights for the study, enrolling 35 healthy women who normally sleep seven to eight hours each night who could complete the 12-week study.

For six weeks the women slept according to their usual routine; for the other six weeks they went to bed 1.5 hours later than usual.

Bottom line: Just go to sleep

"Many problems could be solved if people sleep at least seven to eight hours per night," Jelic says.

I appreciate you taking the time to discuss all this with me. But perhaps I should expound on what I shared earlier.

The Temazepam was prescribed by my regular family doctor during and after my hospitalization with Covid, and for then for Long Covid. The Doxepin was added by the neurologist. One medication, if it worked, would be great, but neither one of those does the trick by itself unless I up the dosage level of either one, but doing that has undesired side effects.

I honestly don't like taking both, but that's why I'm scheduled to see the VA for insomnia in January. I want to centralize the care under one roof and incorporate the usage of my CPAP equipment into the total treatment, because I'm getting three different doctors working three different aspects of all this, and it drives me nuts.

Bottom line, if I have to take medication to help me sleep, then so be it, but it needs to be able to help me turn my brain off, work well in conjunction with my CPAP, and not leave me feeling groggy for half of the next day.

Hi, Ducttape!

Good news. I saw Dr. McCullough last Monday and started his detox protocol the same day.

It has been life-altering.

No more seizures, brain fog, fatigue, etc. I’m actually sleeping about six hours a night now. It will take about six months to clear my entire system, but it has made a huge difference.

Please try it for yourself. You can find it at Mckinney Family Medicine’s website, I believe.

Praying for you!

Hello there!

Interesting. I checked out the McKinney Family Medicine website and it says to contact them in order to order the Base Spike Detox. Thing is, I do not know how that will interact with my current medications. I'll email them but I don't want to do anything that will conflict with what my doctors here want me to do. It's too bad he's in Texas and I'm in Indiana or else I'd try and schedule an appointment with them.

Thanks for updating me on your progress, and if you want to communicate more directly I'll Freepmail you my personal email address.

Definitely, check with your doctor.

I wasn’t on anything else, so I didn’t have that concern.

I just sent them an email. We’ll see what happens. Can you tell me the spike detox is found anywhere else? I actually couldn’t find it on their website.
