Town Uneasy After Ex-Con's Return From Ukraine War

During combat, all restrictions are lifted. Murder, stabbing isn’t a complete taboo like it was before. Such borders don’t disappear immediately, but they become blurred. And under the influence of alcohol and drugs, they can vanish.

“One evening I was in a café with a girlfriend,” a 25-year-old woman named Tatyana, who lives in Ulan-Ude in southeastern Siberia, told RFE/RL in July. “We were talking when a guy in camouflage came up to us. He had a medal on his chest and a huge scar on his face. When he found out I wasn’t interested, he became furious, swearing and flushed…. I tried to leave but he blocked my path and shouted to his friends: ‘Look at this bitch! I sat in the trenches, and she won’t put out.’”

The bartender and the security guard at the cafe were able to defuse the situation, Tatyana said, and she and her friend managed to leave.

I was shot in the face, RVN 1969, the many sailors and officers on the hospital ship "Sanctuary" did a great work putting my face together again. But still had lots of discoloration that took years to come back, even under a full beard.

In school, most of the males were veterans, same for my workplace. In a burst of good luck, I met and married a very nice young lady, the daughter of an MD! And a former US Navy ship's Docter WWII and Korea. He had a special place in his heart for Veterans, even me!

Putin and his cronies glommed most of the luck that Russia had and cursed his troops.

You’ve heard it before and are probably tired of the repetition. But I’ll say it again, because it needs to be said, loudly and often, especially for veterans who left a piece of themselves on the battlefield, even if it’s only copious amounts of blood lost - “Thank you for your service”.

As an infantry vet, please just stop. That’s cringy and means nothing. Do something about instead. Remember the price paid and stand for freedom. Nobody does though. They all give lip service and then just bend over for the tyranny de la jour.

Combat vet? Purple Heart or just the usual bureaucratic fruit salad?

I personally think there’s a difference between a volunteer and someone drafted.

Totally agree. I don’t even acknowledge it whenever it’s said.

I understand hearing that phrase over and over can make it sound trite and phony, but most of us who were never in direct combat thimk the greater Sin would be to ignore such vets, to say nothing, as we are told often happened after Viet Nam.

That’s a pretty ungracious comment. You have no idea what people here are doing in their private lives.

You’ve insulted Zhang Fei for extending a very thoughtful sentiment to you.

Take your weird resentments elsewhere.

Volunteered after the beginning of hostilities, sure. For many, it’s just a career. Vietnam draftees had the choice of fleeing to Europe or Canada. That they went was a choice, especially once they received their deployment orders. Almost all complied but some deserted. Someone in the combat infantry was clearly in far greater danger than a reporter like Al Gore.

3 tours. Do the math. 2PPCLI.

Not the issue. Freedom at all costs.

Hill 667 Kapyong. 224 Patricia’s (2VP) uncle was a warrant there at the time. Don’t say this to him, though he’s gone now, he hated it too.

Think 13th warrior. Just something I took.

Nah, not a dick move, it’s truth. Most of non-wog trades (read non combat arms) don’t like this. Let the rear echelon types eat it up. We prefer you go earn it (very few do)

Or, like the majority of the population, you can kick vets who wouldn’t jab or wear a mask out of legion halls. Minor example in the face of what we’re up against.

Lest we forget? Everyone damn well forgot.

You can be kind and warm, but thanks isn’t needed. Personally, I want action from people. Instead, they’ll just keep letting the world go down the tubes. Keep trying to vote. Until they’re trying to vote themselves out of a camp. It’s sickening to see how clear the big picture is and everyone marching lock step towards it. Also, thanks from those people is 100% insulting.

I’m not in the business of being gracious. I’m in the business of the 3 Ps. Provide, preserve, protect our way of life and our culture. Too bad so few are.
