I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. On the brink of nuclear war with the Russians. We were sweating that one out.
Then it all blew over.
But the stress came back on Dec 24 that year when the NORAD broke into programing to say an unidentified object was reported over the DEW Line.
Was it Russian missiles? Was this the End? We were all glued to the TV for more news!
Then they showed a real chintzy photo of Santa and his sleigh with cotton ball clouds floating by.
We never trusted the news media again after that.
Yes. I remember wondering if I was going to blasted out of existence. Live on Long Island. I feared the bomb for most of my life, real numbing fear in my childhood.
I don’t remember the Santa thing. I still trust the news in some areas though and the distrust only came much later.

I remember that! And you drew the right conclusion in not trusting the media after that. Perfect example of Media’s Inside Joke on itself, playing the public for the suckers they need them to be.

During the Nixon administration we went very high up the DefCon scale one night.
I was a night worker at the time and saw all these cars out on the roads... back when we had an actual civil defense system.
The Russians were rational. They wanted to live. The Mullahs ruling Iran are happy to die for Allah. So they’ll nuke Israel and USA when they have the chance to do that.
