A Florida teacher who was beaten senseless by a 270 pound student has refused to support a lighter sentence for the teen.
High school teacher Joan Naydich was violently attacked by Brendan Depa, then 17, in February after she told him to stop playing on his Nintendo Switch.
The autistic teen was seen on video punching and kicking the educator in the back and head until she lay on the ground unconscious.
Eventually the 6-foot-6 teen, now 18, was pulled away and restrained by other staff.
Naydich, was taken to a local hospital and treated after the assault.
Depa, reportedly threatened to kill Naydich during his arrest.
Depa, was charged as an adult and faces up to 30 years in prison for the first-degree felony charge of aggravated battery.
The teen, who was initially charged as a juvenile before being upgraded to an adult, is set to plead guilty in an attempt to avoid jail time, the New York Post reported.
Naydich has 'shown no interest in mitigating what penalties Depa might face', according to news site Flagler Live.
Depa had three prior battery arrests before the February attack and has been in a prison fight just last month, the Post reported.
'I'm hopeful that the awareness of this incident being spread far and wide will prevent anyone else from ever dealing with the trauma, physical healing and disruption of everyday life this has caused,' she said on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $100,000.
Depa is slated to issue his plea later month and will be sentenced after that in a separate proceeding.
Matanzas High School where the assault occurred has been beset with violence in recent years, the Post reported.

Why would she even be given that option without asking for it? If she wanted to have his sentence reduced, she could have asked for that on her own. Where is this coming from, the defense attorney? Trying to guilt her by publicizing her refusal?

My youngest is a high functioning autistic. He tolerated bullying for years, not caring what any of the kids thought about him.
He only started one fight in his life. A bully had been torturing his friend all year. Finally, 3 days before the end of the school year, he told the bully if he ever touched his friend again, my son would destroy him.
The bully slapped my son’s friend in the back of the head.
My son grabbed this kid, yanked him out of his desk, slammed him against the wall, put his hands around the kid’s neck and lifted him off the ground, choking him.
Everyone was shocked. Two other students pulled my son off him but my son broke free and proceeded to wail away on this kid.
Both kids were suspended.
Summer started early that year.
People gave him a wide berth after that.
If this young man is a low functioning autistic, they can have zero impulse control (like a toddler). They need to be in schools for special needs students if they are repeatedly violent without provocation or cause.
The system should have intervened after the first attack. Now, he’s looking at serious jail time.
Exactly. Why does she need a go fund me page? I assume this guy beat her up in the classroom so she would be covered by insurance by Workmen’s Comp, and probably a lot of different things. And yet it’s the same old story, no matter what no matter who you are I need a go fund me page to beg money from people out there. If I have a good enough story, people will pay me lots of money.
Then you don’t know much about autism
You are correct
I once had a big for her age, autistic, 9-year-old girl bring a huge plastic doll house down on the back of my skull as I was kneeling helping another child. I saw stars.
She didn’t even realize she did it as far as I could tell. I don’t know why she did, I don’t think she knew why.
How racist are these teachers. She should try to understand their students culture and values. The culture is violence with low impulse control and they value the teacher dead. Holding his culture and values against her young, bright student with a promising future against him robs society of experiencing his sharing I. The future. Racist teacher.
Hmmm... You don't say?
He tried to kill her and failed. By standing her ground regarding sentencing, she’s saving the life or lives of this man’s potential victims.
Along with probation for a very long time.
I agree.
He looks primitive. Acting purely on animal instincts and impulses.
I’m not so sure he’s even a human being.
I don't have a lot of respect for the teaching profession but I have less respect for the teaching administrators that put these people in such dangerous environments...
Based on his size (6 ft 6 in)...I don’t think any mental ward will be capable of handling this guy. I’d send him onto prison, with his electronic game stuff.
You’d think that, but there’s all sorts of loopholes and such they can use to try to duck out on it. Further, many institutional insurance programs specifically do not cover any incident involving violence (the grown-up version of school ‘zero-tolerance’ policies.)
Further, there’s often a pretty big time gap between having to pay for medical expenditures and getting the claim paid by the insurance company... which may just refuse to pay the claim and jerk her around.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Re: 23 - thanks for the post. Informative and a nice change from the ignorant and low intellect posts on this thread.
6-foot-6 teenShe is a Brave Lady. I would have let him play and give him a passing grade to move him along the system away from me.
