This was the last gasp of amateurism at the Olympics. Most of the nations who’d already made a sham of the ideal stayed away, the Soviet-bloc boycott of the 1984 Games of Los Angeles allowing the rest of the world to gather one last time under the Games’ original ideology, unburdened by the state-sponsored automatons of Moscow and East Berlin and Prague.
By 1988, those countries would be back. By ’92, everyone else — starting with the U.S. jumping in gleefully with both feet — would welcome professionals, too. But in ’84, it was still possible for an athlete to craft a legend for themselves across a glorious fortnight, plus two. And those 16 days in LA yielded a solar system of American superstars — Edwin Moses, Carl Lewis, Michael Jordan, Greg Louganis, Joan Benoit.
None stood taller, shone brighter, than a 4-foot-11, 100-pound dynamo named Mary Lou Retton. All across 1984, some of the greatest athletes we’d ever see were at the top of their games.

She doesn’t need insurance.
Those online estimates of net worths are napkin calculations. They don’t take into account how the person spends their money. You can take two celebrities with similar incomes throughout their career and they can have totally different net worths, because their lifestyles are different.
I can’t prove anything is out of order, but it doesn’t make sense that she would now be reduced to begging for coins from strangers online. Her sister could help out by explaining why. To leave that part unexplained, unacknowledged looks suspicious.
Yea, “was” has that connotation..... thanks for clearing up....
She has four grown children…..is recently divorced………She was on the Wheaties box at one point, for goodness sakes…..You have to know she has made endorsements on name recognition….which translates MONEY
….she shouldn’t be penniless
Yes, it's suspicious her sister didn't want to go through how her sister, who had her glory 38 years ago, didn't have as smooth a road, after the spotlight is off.
Yes, why wouldn't a sister want to humiliate her sister, who she loves, publicly. Everyone wants to remember her as the smiling pixie she was in 1984. How dare she show us that everything isn't sunshine and rainbows after that.
People in the U.S. think every celebrity is wealthy. Even amateur athletes, who had their heyday long before million dollar deals.
It could be something shady, but it doesn’t trip my wire.
Yes, in Ronald Reagan's first term. Back then it was a lot less, and how long has it been. That money, which is far less than you think, would have been gone a long time ago.
You have to know she has made endorsements on name recognition….which translates MONEY
When was her last endorsement? I don't remember her endorsing anything after the few months after the Olympics. By 1985, she was old news. You think six months of glory means 38 years of riches. ….she shouldn’t be penniless
I have been seeing her in late-night tv commercials the last few weeks Haven’t paid attention to what she was hawking, I think one of those $9.95 a month life insurance policies, or maybe some medical device.
Bruce Jenner was on a Wheaties box as a manly man. Now he's a woman named Caitlyn. Wheaties Box's aren't the eternal testament you think they are.
And us normal people don't realize, people who have a brief episode of fame usually end up bad off financially.
Pneumonitis mistakenly diagnosed as pneumonia - leading to complications because of too many “doctors” being practioners of CDC dogma.
“practioners” scratched; correct:
practitioners
As long as they follow the “standard of care,” they did the right thing. It doesn’t matter if they helped or hurt their patient.
I thought Obama care created situations where a person could NOT pay out of pocket. Without an insurance provider they have to sign up for one of those stupid plans along with say Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
I think she’s on a ventilator with pneumonia. Sad.
Nick, I’m too tired and it’s too late for arguing
Send her all the money you want
I’m glad you clarified that.
She’s terribly sick, though.
Depending on the currency used to make the estimate, that can be quite true.
When I traveled to Asia, I literally carried around tens of thousands in cash. I needed it. I spent 3,500 on a souvenir for my son.
thx for the post. i happened to watch so much of that olympics in person as we grew up in the area. she was the star by far. didn’t know she was so sick. so easiest thing in the world is to give a few bucks to fund her treatment and wing a prayer for her. she’s so deserving!
