Early reports are two dedicated hikers and campers, Doug Inglis and Jenny Gusse, his wife, and their dog, have been killed by a grizzly bear in a remote part of Banff National Park in Canada. At least one empty can of bear spray was found at the scene. From Calgary Herald.com:
From what he was told by Parks Canada officials, it appears the attack began when the couple were in their tent, where they would have typically been poring over e-readers with Tris by their side, Colin said.
“Their tent was crushed and their e-readers were open, they were both discovered in their stocking feet,” he said.
It also appeared one of both of them might have left their tent and fought the bear to the end, he added.
“One can of bear spray had been fully discharged but this bear was not to be deterred,” Colin said.
“It’s possible one was on the outside trying to fend off the bear while the other was in the tent sending the message.”
He was also told the response team encountered the same grizzly believed to be responsible for the deadly attack, and were forced to shoot it.
“In their words, the bear was intent on killing them.”
Colin Inglis told the CBC that the couple had messaged him throughout the trip via a Garmin inReach. On the evening of the attack, he received a message saying the two were setting up camp. But later that evening, Colin Inglis received an SOS message from the two. “The message said ‘Bear attack bad,’” he told the CBC.
Colin Inglis said rescuers found two empty canisters of bear spray in the couple’s campsite.

The only good bear is a dead bear.
Bear spray is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Bears are more valuable than people. If you shoot it, you might hurt it.
Bear spray? I keep an AR-10 handy for bears. Bear spray is for liberal nature weenies who think bears are nice creatures.
Being in Canada took away any option of having a firearm. That stinks.
Previous reports said “hikers” were killed. This is the first time I heard they were attacked in a tent in camp. Cooking and eating food in bear country with hibernation approaching may not be a smart idea.
We were hiking a few miles west of there at Lake Louise a couple weeks ago, but on popular trails with a fair number of other hikers. The day after we departed, a young woman guide was leading a group of 15 hikers to a nearby lake and the group was stalked by a grizz a long ways, but no attack. That was maybe ten days before this fatal attack.
Said it best.
Bear just protecting his house.
If you hit me with pepper spray, bear strength or not, I’m going to kill you if I have any means whatsoever. It would make me very angry and surging with adrenaline. I doubt that’s a preferred state to put a bear into?
I would never think of using it on a grizzly,
maybe a tame black bear digging in the trash, but then yelling or banging pans would work just as well
Bear spray to a hungry grizzly is nothing more than hot sauce.
Contrary to what the weenie headed conservationist greenies say,the best thing to protect a person is a high powered rifle or a large magnum caliber pistol.
People should be required to carry a suitable firearm when hiking in Grizzly country, and prove they are qualified to handle that firearm.
“The only good bear is a dead bear.”
Dead bear. No, Dunbar!
The above for those who didn’t get it, is from the movie Dancing With Bears”, I mean Wolves.
The Bear’s House, The Bear’s Rules!
Thanks for the clarification...
Why? I can understand recommending the use of a firearm, but let Darwin and his bag of laws sort out the idiots.
Why ANYONE would go camping/hiking/running/biking where Grizzly bears live is beyond understanding.
But for those who do, You pays your money and you takes your chances.
Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. Does Argentina have Grizzly bears? (no, spectacled bears)
“There is only a single reported human death due to a spectacled bear, which occurred while it was being hunted and was already shot.”
Okay to camp in Argentina, bear wise anyway.
““Their tent was crushed and their e-readers were open, they were both discovered in their stocking feet,” he said.”
But were their feet still attached?
“But were their feet still attached?”
Some animals will eat only the feet and leave everything else.
Now name that movie.
