Rafael Systems unveiled an early concept model, named the Iron Beam high-energy laser (HEL), at the 2014 Singapore Air Show. That employed dual multi-kilowatt solid-state lasers, compatible with any radar and capable of being mounted on a wide range of vehicles. Sources differ on precise details, but Iron Beam is currently thought to have a maximum effective range of up to seven kilometers and is reportedly capable of destroying missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s), or mortar shells around four seconds after the twin high-energy fiber-optic lasers make contact with their target.

I suppose they could use their laser weapon against Hamas checkpoints and vehicles as well as missles.

Note the very limited range. Some basic study of lasers in Avionics school, but never went past that. At the time (1970s) they used it for Ship to Ship communication, later, after I left, for targeting. (Forward ground observers, etc.)

The laser weapons also exist in the U.S. arsenal, but this is the first (acknowledged) use in actual combat of which I am aware.

A version of directed energy may also have been used on the Twin Towers according to some analysts.

An alternative approach to lasers which has definitely been at least prototyped by the U.S. would be microwaves focused into a beam (but not laser-coherent) by parabolic-antennae transmitters. It occurs to me that if the Israelis are using microwave energy rather than laser, this would account for the limited range reported in the U-tube story.
