“Are the cats OK? Please tell me that you 7 or 8 cats in your 500 sq ft studio apartment are doing OK.”

Do you see what happens when you drink alcohol? You no longer are in touch with reality.

I'm not drunk; I'm not even a drinker. I enjoy a good beer during supper - that's it. It's a persona I use here on FR, much like Dean Martin when he does comedy.

Are the 7 or 8 cats you have in your studio apartment crapping in overfilled litter boxes OK or not?

Maybe they had become a little slack over the last few decades of relative peace.

Could be. And they've gone woke. Now the Gen Z is going to have to fight. And get their hands dirty. They live in a tough neighborhood.

1. Kremlin officials turn to heavy drinking to cope with war stress
By James Kilner

2. Russia Has a Vodka Addiction. So Does Vladimir Putin – But Not the Same Way. [Excerpt]

“On Dec. 31, 1999, while the rest of the world was fixated on Y2K, ailing Russian President Boris Yeltsin tearfully concluded his annual New Year’s address by announcing he was stepping down as president, appointing Putin, his little-known prime minister, in his stead. In the months that followed, Putin stood for election in his own right, winning the presidency handily.

One day before his formal inauguration, on May 6, 2000, Putin signed a directive that would begin the reconsolidation of Russia’s top revenue-generating industries. But Putin’s first target wasn’t oil or natural gas, or diamonds or gold or nickel. It was vodka.

On that date, Putin created a new company called Rosspirtprom — an acronym for Russian Spirits Industry — to seize control of the means of vodka production. It was a move that not only helped Putin amass enormous wealth over the coming two decades, but was a critical first step in cementing his grip on the Russian economy and the Russian people, who would help line his pockets while his vodka helped ruin their health.”

3. Putin calls time on Russians’ alcohol habit [Excerpt]
Gleb Bryanski, Reuters Staff
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-putin-alcohol-idUSTRE60D4N620100114

“In 1985, the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev declared a war on the age-old Russian vice, ordering dramatic cuts in the production of wines and spirits and introducing strict controls on public consumption of alcohol.

The campaign caused a surge in the illegal production of low-quality home-brewed booze and the curbs dealt a blow to the popularity of Gorbachev, the author of the liberal Soviet reform known as Perestroika.

Russians drink 18 liters of alcohol per person per year, a level Putin’s strategy document blames on a lack of coherent state regulation. It says Russia had the lowest alcohol consumption in Europe just before the Bolshevik revolution in 1917.”

Ukraine, Japan start negotiations on bilateral agreement on security guarantees
Ukrinform
Sunday, 08 October 2023, 07
https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-polytics/3771180-ukraine-japan-start-negotiations-on-bilateral-agreement-on-security-guarantees.html

On October 7, the first round of negotiations with Japan on a bilateral agreement on security guarantees, as provided for in the Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, began.

As the press service of the President’s Office reports, the Ukrainian negotiating team was headed by Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Ihor Zhovkva. The team also included Deputy Head of the Office Roman Mashovets, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mykola Tochytskyi, Advisor to the Head of the President’s Office Oleksandr Bevz.

Japan became the fourth country, after the USA, Great Britain and Canada, with which Ukraine started relevant negotiations.

“The start of bilateral consultations with Japan not only confirms our strategic partnership but also demonstrates global support for Ukraine which goes far beyond the borders of Europe and North America. It is symbolic that Japan started bilateral negotiations on security guarantees with Ukraine during its G7 presidency,” Zhovkva emphasized.

For Ukraine, these bilateral guarantees are a continuation of the significant non-lethal, security, humanitarian and financial assistance that Japan has provided to our country since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. An integral part of security guarantees is also assistance in Ukraine’s economic recovery which will be additionally discussed during the Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled for the beginning of next year in Japan.

The parties agreed on further coordination and a plan for bilateral negotiations by the end of this year.

As reported, 28 countries have already joined the Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine. With some of them, the negotiation process regarding the conclusion of bilateral agreements on security guarantees for Ukraine has already begun.

07 Oct: BRACE FOR IT. Ukrainians MAKE A SUDDEN FLANK ATTACK | War in Ukraine Explained
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1C7u0Y6IWM

⚠️ Watch RFU in 20 languages: https://www.youtube.com/@RFU/channels

I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the five hundred ninety first day of the war.

Day 591: Oct 07

Today, there is a lot of news from the south.

First of all, today, Ukrainian forces conducted a missile and drone strike on Crimea. However, this strike was very peculiar compared to what we have seen recently because, firstly, the strike was extremely dispersed, secondly, the strike targeted unconventional areas, and thirdly, Ukrainians targeted these areas with lone missiles and drones.

Russian sources reported that Ukrainians attacked Russian objects in western Crimea with 1 drone and 1 missile. 2 more missiles were detected past Cape Fiolent in the south, and at least 1 more missile – in the central part near Dzankoi. Russian sources claimed that all objects were shot down, with the exception of those around Dzankoi. Local residents posted footage of explosions and confirmed that Ukrainian missiles hit unspecified facilities on the main railroad.

The analysts concluded that the use of lone drones and missiles in unconventional places means only one thing – Ukrainians are testing the Russian air defense in preparation for the next series of devastating strikes, and as the Russian Black Sea Fleet was already forced out of Crimea, the only valuable targets here remain bases, logistical centers, and fuel and ammunition depots.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainians used modified S-200 missiles, which made the Russian analysts even more concerned about the security of central Crimea, as a lone S-200 missile managed to pass through the air defense with no hurdles. Maybe this is because after shooting down their own fighter jets for 2 weeks straight, the Russian air defense operators decided not to intercept lone objects in the air this time.

In the meantime, when it comes to the Tokmak direction, here, Ukrainians have increased the scale of their offensive operation on Kopani. Recently released geolocated footage shows how Russian units are striking Ukrainian positions in the tree lines almost directly north of the settlement.

Based on the footage, it seems like Ukrainians have concentrated their forces north of the settlement and made a sudden flank attack to complement the main attack from Robotyne. Another video shows the Russian thermobaric artillery system TOS-1 trying to target Ukrainian forces concentrations around the village and prevent an attack from the north.

Ukrainian Special Forces published a video that showed how they managed to identify the Russian thermobaric artillery system TOS-1, tracked it down, and, in coordination with HIMARS crews, destroyed it right before it made a new strike to undermine the Ukrainian offensive effort.

Ukrainian Special Forces also detected a Russian air defense rocket launcher Strila-10, and promptly destroyed it,. On top of that, Ukrainian fighters identified and destroyed a powerful electronic warfare system R-330, which opened the sky for Ukrainian drone operators, especially assault drones, allowing to amplify the attacks.

Interestingly, today, it was confirmed that Russians tried to attack Robotyne from Kopani multiple times in September.

The Institute for the Study of War assessed the dynamics in this region and concluded that even though Russian forces likely temporarily regained certain positions west of Robotyne, they subsequently lost the sub-tactical initiative on the Ukrainian flank near Robotyne during a series of counterattacks in the past few weeks.

Ukrainian military analysts gave more details about the situation and reported that elements of Russian Airborne formations had attacked Ukrainian positions on the Kopani-Robotyne direction in a failed attempt to alleviate pressure on Russian forces near Novoprokopivka.

The analysts stated that the Russian 104th Airborne Regiment failed to reach the outskirts of Robotyne and even lost several positions near Kopani. Nonetheless, judging by the Ukrainian decisive reaction to attack in this direction, the Russian attacks at least achieved spoiling effects on Ukrainian offensive operations.

So far, Ukrainians continue advancing. The Spokesman for the Ukrainian Forces in the Tokmak direction Oleksandr Shtupun reported that Ukrainian forces achieved success west of Robotyne and established control over new trenches and fortifications. Interestingly, some less prominent Russian sources admit that Ukrainians pushed further overnight and continued attacking Russian positions implementing the tactics of using small infantry groups.

Zelensky Pushing US for Long-term Security Deal Based On ‘Israeli Model’

BY DANIEL BUSH ON 8/31/23, newsweek.com

VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY
RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR

As Ukraine’s counteroffensive grinds on, officials far away from the frontlines in Washington and Kyiv are quietly negotiating a formal alliance that could reshape Europe’s security landscape.

The negotiations have been overshadowed by Kyiv’s push this summer to retake Russian-held territory in southern Ukraine, but the discussions drew fresh attention recently when Ukrainian President Volodymyr said he expects Ukraine and the United States will agree to a security pact that’s similar to the alliance between the U.S. and Israel. The two countries don’t have a defense treaty, but the U.S. provides Israel with billions in military aid and has long been its most important ally.

“We will likely get this exact model,” Zelensky said in an interview Sunday with Ukrainian media, “the Israeli model that includes weapons, technology, training [and] finances.”

Such an arrangement would provide Ukraine less security than membership in NATO, which President Biden has said won’t happen before the end of the war. But it would establish Ukraine as a critical long-term partner for the U.S. in Eastern Europe, while sending Russia the message that Western support for Kyiv won’t waiver.

“The point is to telegraph to Russia that they can’t just wait out the West,” said Eric Ciaramella, a former director for Ukraine at the National Security Council.

A formal security commitment to Ukraine “is a credible interim arrangement until the issue of NATO membership is clarified,” said Ciaramella, a Russia and Ukraine expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

A bilateral security alliance along the lines of the pact between America and Israel would presumably create a permanent stream of military assistance to Ukraine, along with training, intelligence cooperation and other resources. Since the start of the war Congress has approved military aid for Ukraine on an ad hoc basis, creating uncertainty for Kyiv’s military planners.

A long-term security guarantee could also help insulate Ukraine from changes in power in the White House and Congress. A growing number of congressional Republicans and some of the party’s 2024 presidential candidates oppose giving Ukraine more military aid.

But it’s unclear from Zelensky’s comments whether negotiators are using Israel as a model for Ukraine, or if that is merely the direction he would like to see the talks take. Zelensky has been known to goad and cajole Western allies to try to get them to do more to support Ukraine.

Zelensky’s comments Sunday were not the first time he’s raised Israel as a possible model for the U.S.-Ukraine relationship going forward. He has mentioned it on at least two occasions last year, and it was included in a 2022 white paper endorsed by Zelensky’s top aide.

The Biden administration has said little publicly about the security negotiations with Ukraine since announcing in early August that the talks had begun.

In response to a request for comment, a White House official directed Newsweek to the joint declaration of support to Ukraine issued by Biden and the other leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations at the NATO summit in Lithuania in July.

All of the G7 countries pledged to formalize bilateral security commitments with Ukraine to help it build a military “force capable of defending Ukraine now and deterring Russian aggression in the future.” The commitments will include military equipment, training, intelligence sharing and supporting Ukraine’s defense industry, according to the communique.

The U.S. State Department declined to comment for this article. Officials from the State and Defense departments and the National Security Council launched bilateral security negotiations with Ukrainian officials on Aug. 3, according to the State Department.

The Biden administration has not laid out a timeline for the U.S.-Ukraine negotiations. Several questions remain about what an agreement would look like and how it would be implemented.

In the case of Israel, Congress is required by law to ensure that U.S. military aid in the Middle East region doesn’t damage Israel’s military superiority over its neighbors. That requirement enjoys broad bipartisan support and has served as a benchmark for ensuring Israel receives robust U.S. support.

The White House could take a similar approach with Ukraine, or try in some other way to codify U.S. support for Ukraine.

Either way, experts said an agreement backed by Biden would require approval from Congress on funding and other assistance. It’s also not a given that U.S. lawmakers will be as supportive of Ukraine as they are of Israel, said Jeremy Ben-Ami, the president of J Street, a nonprofit liberal advocacy group.

“The U.S.-Israel relationship is ‘unshakeable’ because of the bipartisan support that Israel gets,” Ben-Ami said. “I don’t know if that model is replicable anywhere else in the world.”

Zelensky is hoping Ukraine will be another exception. Ciaramella, the former NSC adviser, argued a security deal between Washington and Kyiv would benefit both sides, however it’s structured.

“It’s making the best, strongest set of commitments at a time when the platinum standard is just not achievable at the moment,” Ciaramella said, referring to NATO membership for Ukraine.

A long-term agreement is “not a silver bullet that will end the war overnight,” Ciaramella added. “But protracted conflict is a conflict of wills, and we have to show we’re in it for the long haul.”

Perhaps this blatant attack on Israel will wake up some who seem content to let Russia swarm all over Ukraine. I wonder how many votes for another Ukraine package whoever made this anti Israel has helped sway. Anyone have a guess?

Could the move to remove the Speaker of our House been promoted by someone in the US working against Israel? Not having a Speaker will probably slow down efforts to help Israel AND Ukraine from these attacks.

This whole world "event" centers on money. As noted in comment # 107 (posted to yesterday's thread to another Freeper):
The links to document the above are there. "The report identifies many prominent investors, including Vanguard Group, Kopernik Global Investors, BNP Asset Management Holding, Goldman Sachs-owned NN Investment Partners Holdings, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which manages Norway's sovereign wealth fund. A number of large US pension funds, foundations, and university endowments are also invested in Ukrainian land through NCH Capital – a US-based private equity fund, which is the fifth largest landholder in the country."

Note that the Z-government is participating in this. "In 2020, Zelenskyy gave in to the IMF's demands and finally repealed the moratorium. 'Agribusiness interests and oligarchs will be the primary beneficiaries of such reform,' said Olena Borodina of the Ukrainian Rural Development Network. 'This will only further marginalise smallholder farmers and risks severing them from their most valuable resource.' But the World Bank could barely contain its excitement, gushing: 'This is, without exaggeration, a historic event.'

The point is that Ukraine is being carved into chunks, Putin taking some, and a lot of Western players taking other chunks with the approval (or at least acquiescence) of Zelensky, as profiteering goes on through many means, large and small.

Lots of players, and at many levels. The "little guy," be he Ukrainian, Russian or American, is losing throughout. And the inverse is also true. The "big guys," Ukrainians, Russians, Americans -- and now we add from above -- Norwegians (recalling that Stoltenberg was prime minister of Norway) and others in Europeans, as well as the cottage industry of monetizing "content" which is promoted daily, all come down to money. Few clean hands in this mess.

This is likely why so many dearly want there to be a "white hat" in this "historic event," in the World Bank's parlance. It seems there really isn't.

As observed and documented: "The whole Ukraine goes for sale - massive profit opportunities being created by the war." Modern Diplomacy (EU). Another of their articles is also informative:

The real issue is not about Ukraine – it is NATO and Russia

I post this to you, because I expected the previous interlocutor would ignore it, and thought the content should be further disseminated.

One also notes that discussion over this tidbit has been avoided:
"A survey of two Kyiv social interviewers, released on September 11, found that 78% of Ukrainians hold Zelensky responsible for corruption in the government. A related poll found that 55% believe that Western military aid should depend on the fight against corruption."

Source: https://censor.net/ua/resonance/3444483/toppomichnykiv_zelenskogo_prodovjuyut_zvynuvachuvaty_v_koruptsiyi_stattya_reuters

Monetized YouTube videos are so trustworthy, and even censor.net was cited until I asked about copyright issues for quoting entire articles. But among the "censor" things this one was not mentioned.

"War and theft" through corruption, as has been noted, is the profiteering.

Who should America support? Which land has the greater need? Ukraine is winning her war with Russia and are set to push out Russia next year. They don’t need the help. But, If Israel falls to Hamas they will butcher everyone-many American Jews who live there will be murdered. Even if Putin won—he wouldn’t kill everyone, they would be left with a rump state or the people could move to the paradise of Europe. There is No chance for a Jew who lives in Israel—No safe havens for them.
