In the Martian language, according to Heinlein in
Stranger in a Strange Land, the verb "to grok" literally meant "to drink." Its greater connotation was "to understand." It didn't relate to the practice of Martians eating their dead.
The spirits of the dead, known as "the old ones," ruled Martian society.
