In the Martian language, according to Heinlein in Stranger in a Strange Land, the verb "to grok" literally meant "to drink." Its greater connotation was "to understand." It didn't relate to the practice of Martians eating their dead.

The spirits of the dead, known as "the old ones," ruled Martian society.

When I read the headline first thing I thought of was this book I read fifty years ago. Stranger in a Strange Land. Didn’t care for it.
