Dave Brubeck-Take Five (live performance Dave Bribecl Quartet)
youtube ^ | 2012 | Tori Chitic

Paul Desmond (alto sax), Joe Morello (drums), Eugene Wright (bass) and Dave Brubeck (piano)

Live in Belgium, 1964

One of the most iconic Jazz songs of the 1950s/1960s. The song's title came about when drummer Joe Morello asked the sax player, Paul Desmond, to write a song in 5/4 time, rather than the conventional 4/4 or 3/4. Morello played an unforgettable drum solo in the middle of the song.

Sorry about the title: Should be “Dave Brubeck Quartet”

Thanks. Joe Morello was great! 5/4 time did not come easy for me.

Take Five...my all time favorite! Saw the group live at Berlin Sport Palast in 1966. Awesome!

Morello lived, for a time, in Irvington, NJ where I grew up. Never met him though.

I heard his quartet twice in Boston when I went to school there. Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis too! Great times.

Great tune. Weird time signature.

I got to see the DBQ in concert at Arizona State U in or around 1968-70. Desmond was still with them.

As a drummer, I was thrilled when Joe Morello invited all drummers to come back stage and talk.

Still my fave jazz drummer of all. So much tastier than speed demon Buddy Rich.

Dave Brubeck was not only one of the “greats” of Jazz history, but he was a super nice guy as well. I had the pleasure of getting to know him, and even jammed with him on stage a few times. I was in a funk/rock band with Dave’s son Chris. Dave did a bunch of “Two Generations of Brubeck” shows featuring my/Chris’s band Sky King, and older brother Darius’s band as well. I also got to know younger brother Dan Brubeck, as we were classmates at Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan in 1969-70. The whole Brubeck family is awesome!
