In September, Narcan — the first over-the-counter naloxone nasal spray approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration without a prescription — was rolled out to pharmacies and drugstores across the United States with a retail price of $44.99 for a pack of two devices. Experts have already hailed the widespread availability of the medication, which quickly reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, as a "lifesaving" tool amid alarming rates of drug overdose deaths. In 2021, more than 75% of those deaths involved opioids, with fentanyl contributing to more than 77% of adolescent overdose deaths that year. Indeed, New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issued an advisory this week urging New Yorkers to "carry naloxone and know how to use it," noting that fentanyl was detected in 81% of the city's drug overdose deaths in 2022.
But do enough Americans know enough about Narcan, the brand-name nasal spray form of naloxone, and how to use it to make a difference? According to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll, just 28% of respondents said they had heard "a lot" about Narcan; a further 43% had a "little" awareness about the over-the-counter medication. And 29% of those surveyed reported hearing "nothing at all" about it. Broken down by age, respondents ages 18 to 29 were least likely to be informed about Narcan, which is credited with saving pop star Demi Lovato during a 2018 overdose; 50% in that demographic had heard "nothing at all" and just 17% had heard "a lot."
The poll also found that just 7% of respondents had purchased Narcan, and only 8% had been trained to administer it in the event of an emergency.

They carry on like junkies dying from ODs is a bad thing. But it kind of depends on your point of view. From the junkies’ point of view it’s a bad thing, and from their families’ point of view it’s probably a bad thing, but from the view of the rest of us who A. Suffer from their criminal depredations B. Find our tax dollars are used to support them C. Have to compete with them for medical resources from ERs to infectious disease treatments paid for by us and D. Suffer from the increase in crime from the Mexican cartels they finance with their addiction, dead junkies are not a bad thing at all. In fact if they all ODd today tomorrow we’d see a better country.
That was my thought exactly. I was surprised it took seven posts to get there.
Also, if every junkie ODd tomorrow, those with legitimate need for opioid pain medications might well find their lives made easier. I don’t know anyone who takes pain meds for fun or to get high, but I do know several who have to take them regularly to deal with constant, severe pain. The restrictions on getting these medications are shameful, and it’s all because of the GD junkies.
“I doubt it, and I, for one, do not ever expect to be somewhere where I encounter an OD’d fentanyl user.”
High probability of not needing it if one stays out of DemocRAT run cities, congress, and media offices.
Wife’s an ER nurse.
Most of the time Narcan wakes a druggie up, they wake up swinging.
She has them in restraints then brings them back.
“So far my little dog has resisted becoming addicted to fentanyl”
Just continue keeping him away from NYC preschools.
Very stupid idea.
Dope heads will increase the drug increase, counting on Narcan.
Also, there is a huge problem. Narcan is braked down a lot sooner than e.g. fentanyl. So getting Narcan gives temporary relief, but victim often dies when Narcan effect dies out.
Narcan should be given by series of doses, spaced in time. But nobody knows!
I don’t use illicit drugs, so why would I need it?
Probably 98% of Americans outside the Democrat Cesspool Cities will never meet a person using fentanyl or any other hard opioid. Any druggie they DO meet will be in a situation where a Taxpayer Relief Shot is more appropriate, so spend that $45 on ammo.
Wouldn’t it be practicing medicine without a license if I administer that to someone having a seizure or a diabetic reaction?
The Pharmacy always keeps trying to push it on me.
And I keep telling them that if I’m (or anyone is) dumb enough to overdose, then the gene pool will be better off without us.
Would I even bend over to give some drug addict Narcan even if I had some?
NO!
I befriended a man who was an ex-doper and had been homeless. He and his buddy would point out people on the streets and tell me what drugs they were high on. I would not even have noticed those people as having an issue.
Not planning to OD (and history suggests my plan will work), so I’m in that 66%.
It is, and believe it or not, these idiots are surprised you don’t want to stock up! [eyeroll]
And anything with propellant is hard to get because of “global warming”. Morons
In today’s litigious society, who in the hell would do any life-saving procedures on a complete stranger?
I don’t plan on going to Cancun either.
Good point.
