It's been two weeks since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the latest COVID-19 vaccine, and many people still can't get an appointment.
This is the first time the federal government is not taking the lead on the vaccine rollout, instead relying on the commercial market and private health care system to reach most Americans.
In Santa Cruz, the only providers KSBW could confirm that are actively giving the vaccine are CVS and Walgreens pharmacies.
However, multiple customer services representatives tell KSBW the vaccine has been in short supply, and there's a backlog of appointments.
The soonest and closest available appointment as of Sept. 25 is mid-October in Los Gatos and San Jose.
Dignity Health, which operates Dominican Hospital, has not received its order of the latest COVID-19 vaccines.
Kaiser Permanente confirmed it has the vaccines in hand but will not be accepting appointments until October.
California governor signs law barring schoolbook bans based on racial, gender teachings The vaccine is free for most people who have private insurance, Medi-Cal and Medicare.
For those without insurance, people can get a free vaccine through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Bridge to Access program and the Vaccines for Children program.

Free needles at River and US1. MNRA, not sure.
“There is a shortage.” Codewords that trigger the consumer.
I remember when there was a guard dog in the toilet paper isle. Good times.
Is this the obsolete vaccine for a variant that was around last Spring?.
Who is stupid enough to get a so called “vaccine booster”. It doesn’t work folks!
Fine. You can take mine. Vaxx up, suckers.
I saw an interview with a county health officer. The county isn’t going to order more vaccines than they need because they will get stuck with paying for unused doses, so it makes sense to schedule the shots.
