Donkeys are cool animals and make great watchdogs for livestock. Don’t mess with them.

Yeah, back 25 years ago when my father had Oregon property he essentially leased a Donkey to protect his 10 sheep. They will wreck havoc on Coyotes.

Fast foreword 25 years. There is a Community college just a 1/2 mile down the road. There is about 20 acers of open adjacent land that gets over grown every year and in come the goats to clears it out. For the first time I noticed Donkeys with the heard a couple weeks back. We have a Coyote problem here in So Cal.

I’ve heard they guard livestock against wolves in the U.P. of Michigan.

when I lived on a small horse ranch in my early days we had a donkey named “tuffy” that would bray and bite at anyone who came through the gate and tried to walk through the corral to the main house. Tuffy was scary as hell until you learned how to deal with him. The owners kept a large stick by the gate to grab and walk with, when Tuffy knew you had the stick he would just follow along and bray at you but he wouldn’t try to bite you.

Tuffy wasn’t that stupid but he sure as heck kept strangers off the ranch.

They leave something to be desired as big riding dogs, though.
