If I’m not mistaken, people can build up a resistance to laxatives. I don’t know this to be true, but I thought I read it. If it is true, it means that people who regularly take laxatives will be dependent on them. They will need to continue them or even increase them just to move bowels.

That is correct.

Misuse of laxatives eventually shuts down the body’s own elimination system to the point where laxative are required for it to work................

From link:

Over time, excessive laxative use can make constipation worse rather than better. This is because laxatives “overwork” the digestive tract, gradually reducing muscle tone and nerve signaling. This can start to slow (rather than speed) digestive muscle contractions.14

People who abuse laxatives can also develop a tolerance to the medications, leading them to need higher and higher doses to have a bowel movement. This is known as a laxative dependency (a.k.a. “laxative addiction”).12

I know a lady that has all kinds of constipation problems even though she doesn’t have a particularly bad diet. She does eat too much and it makes it worse for her though she isn’t real big and fat.

She told me she started taking laxatives about 8 years ago. She is always miserable and she can’t go without them. She keeps increasing the dose.

Her doctor tried to tell her and suggested things like Miralax on a regular basis and certain foods, magnesium etc.

She just didn’t listen and griped about her misery all the time.

I finally told her to quit griping if she didn’t want to get better.

I have seen it before and it results in a dependence on laxatives. The ultimate result can be a serious out of control electrolytes and other things. There are some people with very strange habits and ideas. They eventually catch up with them.

Why can't everybody be normal like me?
