Do you remember the 21st night of September?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away
Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing
As we danced in the night
Remember how the stars stole the night away
Hey hey hey
Ba de ya, say do you remember
Ba de ya, dancing in September
Ba de ya, never was a cloudy day
Ba duda, ba duda, ba duda, badu
Ba duda, badu, ba duda, badu
Ba duda, badu, ba duda

If anyone here has a time machine to take us back to 1978 it would alright with me.
1975 would be a bit better. Just askin’
You know, if any of you have solved that time-travel problem.
Thanks in advance. Or maybe in the past. Or something.

I’m with you on that, Matthew.

EW&F put on one of the greatest shows I have ever attended. Must have been very late 70’s, possibly as late as 1981. Spectacular.

“Why Is September 21 Earth, Wind & Fire Day?”
Pretty much the peak for the fire season in Southern California, due to very strong and dry, easterly Santa Ana winds that blow in.

Just an outstanding band, I wish more blacks would return to this type of music instead of this ghetto rap crap.

Seriously, give this song a listen without distractions. It is sheer genius as pop/soul/funk goes. Try to isolate individual instruments and hear the melody for the isolated instrument. Hint: there is none. You’ve heard of multipart harmony. September has that and multipart melody. The instruments; horns, two guitars, bass, keyboards and even percussion; played together make up the melody, each having its own part, but it sounds as if there was one underlying melody. No single instrument plays the melody by itself.
Compare all that to today’s pop music. Many songs, if you call them that, have little or no original melody. They don’t play drums, they simply repeat the same drum machine track over and over. There are no key changes. No originality. Today’s so-called artists can’t even sing unless their voices are pumped through autotune. (These comments do not apply to all new music, just most of the trash in the top 50 on Apple and Spotify. There are still incredibly talented new artists, you just have to spend some time hunting for them.)

Seven O’clock in the morning and I’m riding the overnight train
I’ve got ten tonnes of luggage but I left it behind when I came
I look at my watch, says September seventeen
We’re riding past some place where I’ve never been
And I’m waving through the window as we go
Somebody says “Well, hey, what are you waving at?”
Well what have I got to lose
Somebody might wave back

September 21st happens to be my birthday. I’ll give that tune a listen before bed tonight.
Haven’t heard it in ages.
Thanks.

Was that the one with the spinning piano? “That’s the way of the world” is one of my favorites.

Fantasy is my favorite Earth, Wind and Fire song. When Phillip Bailey was a young man his voice was an incredible instrument in its own right. It’s shame the great ones grow old.
