If you discount time shopping, storing, cooking and cleaning up the mess. The "savings" IMO is minimal.
When I was a kid I worked at a high end steak house. The meat was fantastic. The manager told me restautants get the best cuts of meat because there is only so much of it to go around. He said the public just can't get US Prime beef.
This is the highest grade of beef with the most fat marbling. This meat is very tender and only accounts for about 2.9 percent of all graded beef. U.S. Prime is usually reserved for high-end dining establishments. Because this grade of beef has such a high level of fat marbling, it is excellent for dry-heatcooking
The way to save money cooking for yourself starts with how you buy.
My wife and I just went out to dinner with friends at a local ‘nothing fancy but good’ place, and the total for the four of us with tip was $192.
I could have done it at home for about $100.
And we saved about 75 miles of driving.
Prime beef is sold in places like Costco and Sam’s Club, and lately I’ve seen some, not much, at the local grocery store.

LOL, if you just compare every second of your life to being at work you don’t save anything.
I was staying with a buddy and he wanted to order pizza when I said let’s just cook something and save the money, his response was “Time is Money”, I pointed out that it was 7 p.m. and he was sitting on the couch watching TV, if he wanted to make money then consider cooking a $5.00 dinner instead of ordering a $35.00 dinner making $30.00 while we were watching his stupid TV show.
If you want to make your off time productive then do things with it that save money, cook your own steak, mow your own yard, shave your own face, wash your own clothes, and make your own coffee.
“If you discount time shopping, storing, cooking and cleaning up the mess. The “savings” IMO is minimal.”
depends on how you do it ... if you cook YUGE amounts and package and freeze meal-sized portions, then you amortize the setup and cleanup time amongst a large number of home-cooked meals ...
and also, compare the time it takes to go out to eat 2-3 meals a day, whether so-called fast-food or fine dining ...
only way to save time eating out is to have food delivered, which is expensive and lord only knows what the drug-addict cooks are doing back in the restaurant kitchen as well as the drug-addict delivery driver ...
“ He said the public just can’t get US Prime beef.”
It’s available at our local Costco and the Jewel, both within a half a mile of where I’m sitting. For a real treat I visit the local butcher where I can have my USDA Prime Porterhouse cut to my specifications.
It ain’t cheap, but it is worth it.
