A well functioning Faraday cage will sever communications between phone and tower. As long as the device is turned on it will continue to seek an active access point until it either finds one or exhausts its battery.
I shut my devices down before sealing in the cage.
The old terrestrial MW networks of the telcos were C-band 6/4 Ghz. They used to use passive plano-reflectors for terrain problems. Thus, I can’t see how 5G 6G, at even higher mmW frequencies, will penetrate a sealed, heavy-duty enclosure, let alone a Faraday bag. Its been a long while since my tech days, so I may be out of touch.

Turn the phone off first. I have in the past wrapped mine in tinfoil which also works but I turn it off first. Never had a problem.

Telco/cellular C-band is still ‘owned’ for military RADAR, and unless you buy an expensive ongoing license, your zippy new C-band CBRS private 5G network can endure a lot of interference from nearby permitted use, even other private 5G networks, and it’s “tough noogies” for you.
Cellular radios and towers are VERY low power compared to most other applications. So yeah, *IF* you put your smart phone into a microwave oven your RSRP/RSSI/RSRQ are so weak/ poor that you’re never gonna connect and you’re likely safe.
The same is true for an old metal Charles Chips can.
All depends on what threat you are protecting yourself and your devices from.
AS long as YOUR airplane mode also turns off Bluetooth and NFC.

I can’t tell exactly what waveforms they used and the intensity, but it is generally reasonable to look at susceptibility in this way (conducted and radiated). It’s better if you do it both at the same time, but this is decent info.
I’m not sure this is what they did, but I suspect that it is - but the bottom line is that placing properly rated Metal-Oxide Varistors (MOV’s) or similar device very close to the device on any conductors can be an effective way to protect the device (and some related grounding). Solar Panels have a blocking diode that needs to be protected and can be protected similarly.
Solar panels themselves have some additional vulnerability on the multiple cells, I don’t think this setup would test that issue fully.

To add to that, many communications devices also will lose their minds if not allowed to communicate for too long, and will require a reboot to reinitialize.
