I wish he never ran the first time. He was well-respected and well-liked. Then, he ran for office, and the press dragged him through the mud.
Maybe he handled the criticism well on a personal level, but it was difficult to watch.
As a side note, he’s 72, and he doesn’t seem to be aging. He must sleep well with a clear conscience.

The Left has raised the politics of personal destruction to an art form. They attack from all sides and it is an effective tactic for them.
The ultimate effect is one of discouraging many qualified people from running for high office. They simply don’t want to expose themselves and their families to this kind of abuse.
So its the country that loses the services of good people.
