Large gators live in that lake and have for many years. So the ranchers buy and build corrals right up to the lake and don’t consider they are putting cattle into the mix after chasing a lot of the gators’ food sources away from the area. In the article it states a few calves were missing but it does not state if the gator was responsible. So they killed a protected animal that without proof it was harming them at all and may not even have been the gator killing calves if they even saw one as they were missing calves, not killed that they know of.
I equate this to killing sharks because a surfer was hit. The surfer goes out into the water, many times wearing a dark wet suit, and floats like a sea lion knowing there are sharks out there where they live, gets hit and people go shark hunting looking for any animal that might have done it. Doesn’t make sense.
And if the ranchers knew it could happen, and they were encroaching, then they should have taken measure to protect their stock. And whose to say people didn’t steal them since they aren’t sure. So if they find people are, do they go out and kill them. Not for many years.
